Foxglove love 💓

Digitalis purpurea

Toxic foxglove is full of magic, and a meditation in both patience and impermanence. 💞

Like mullein, it’s a biannual member of the scrophulariaceae family. The first year, foxglove is simply a basal rosette of soft green leaves. Only in the second year does it shoot up the most magnificent flower spikes. Then, in floral splendor, she seeds and dies away. 🥀

Teeming with poisonous cardiac glycosides, digitalis is used medically in minute doses to create a stronger and more efficient heartbeat. This is called hormesis, or a hormetic dose response, in which small amounts of a toxin produce a beneficial effect.🫀

Foxglove is associated with the fae and their magic, death and liminal spaces, and energetic protection. ✨

I took the End-of-Life Doula course in early 2021. I was pregnant with our first child, we had just moved across the country, and social distancing had been the norm for about a year. It was a very lonely time.

Like so many intuitive decisions I’ve made, I couldn’t quite see where it would take me, but I simply listened to an inner calling.

Nothing I’ve done this way has elicited quick results, but over years, each thread I’ve followed, each stepping stone on this path I’ve taken, has woven into the most beautiful tapestry of a life filled with meaning.

It’s not always easy, and I’m still learning as I grow, and growing as I learn. And I’m so grateful to every person who has stepped in as a guide and friend along the way. 🩵✨🌿
