THE DO'S OF ACNE TREATMENT!

* Stay hydrated: That doesn't mean just drinking a lot of water. Use moisturizer, a himinifier, and protect your skin from the sun.
* Consult a dermatologist: We will help you to uncover the source of your acne and develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
* Find the right product: Consult a professional to help you pick the right one.
* Wear sunscreen: tanning does not clear up acne and can in fact make it worse! It can also increase the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
* Wash your face: but don't over do it!
* Avoid pore-clogging products: Look for products that say "noncomedogenic",

While it can be tempting to simply squeeze a pimple to try to get rid of it, we strongly discourage this approach. Why? Popping a pimple incorrectly can increase your risk of infection and scarring.

If you’re prone to acne, chances are you have a blackhead extractor and often turn to it in desperate panic when your skin starts acting up. But, like everything in skincare, if you don’t know how to use it properly, it can aggravate your skin.

You need proper technique to avoid:
* Permanent acne scar.
* More noticeable acne.
* More painful acne.
* An infection.

There Is No Evidence That Chocolate Itself Causes Acne!

It's good news for all you chocoholics: eating chocolate does not cause pimples. There are no studies linking this sweet treat to the development of acne. There is no evidence that cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made, cause pimples.

That means that eating an occasional chocolate bar, or two or three, will not cause acne. Cutting chocolate out of your diet won't clear up a case of acne, either.

How severe your acne is will determine where you should go for treatment and what treatment you should have.

The severity of acne is often categorised as:

* Mild – mostly whiteheads and blackheads.
* Moderate – more widespread whiteheads and blackheads, with some papules and pustules.
* Severe – lots of large, painful papules, pustules, nodules or cysts; you might also have some scarring.

6 things men should know about acne:

* Men whose fathers had severe acne are more likely to have it.
* Some medications such as lithium, which treats bipolar disorder, and corticosteroids like prednisone can also bring on acne.
* Men often get acne on the face and back.
* Sweating can make it worse.
* Breakouts on the back often happen in hot weather or after exercising.
* Some men get shaving bumps that look like acne, but ingrown hairs or shaving mistakes are the real cause.

Your skin is covered in millions of pores, that sit at your hair follicles. Pores connect the surface of your skin to an underlying gland called the sebaceous gland. This gland produces an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is released continually, in small amounts, into the hair follicles and skin. Dead skin cells are also carried up with the sebum so they can be washed away.

Occasionally, the sebaceous gland produces too much sebum. The overflow of oil can clog the pore. The excess oil and dead skin cells form a plug in the gland. This pore becomes clogged with sebum, oil, and possibly bacteria. The bacteria can multiply. These bacteria can lead to an infection, swelling, and inflammation around the clogged pore. A white tip of pus will sometimes form at the top of the clogged pore. This creates a pimple.

Swipe to read some facts about back acne!

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 40-50 million Americans have acne at any one time.

Its severity can vary from just a few spots to larger clusters of affected areas. As well as on the back, acne can appear on the face, neck, and chest. If acne is left untreated, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as it clears.

Atrophic acne scars are more common than keloids and hypertrophic scars.

Atrophic scars are flat, shallow depressions that heal below the top layer of skin. These scars are commonly caused by severe cystic acne. However, other types of acne can cause them as well.

Unlike atrophic scars, hypertrophic and keloid scars form as raised lumps of scar tissue where the acne once was. This happens when scar tissue builds up, sometimes from previous acne spots.

Hormonal acne is exactly what it sounds like — acne tied to fluctuations in your hormones.

Unless your hormonal acne is mild, over-the-counter (OTC) products usually aren’t successful.This is because hormonal acne typically takes the form of cystic bumps.

These bumps form deep under the skin, out of reach of most topical medications. Oral medications can work from the inside out to balance your hormones and clear up the skin. Common options include oral contraceptives and anti-androgen drugs.

Remember: Never self-medicate! If you think you may have hormonal acne, contact us! We will make a plan specially designed for you!
