The 2nd Annual Asheville African American Health Symposium begins today with a Simulation Center experience where we will have dialogue about implicit and explicit bias in educational settings. We will also honor Dr. Bill Gist by awarding one of our team members with the “Gist Leadership Award”!

Later this evening we will have dinner and dialogue about “The Role of the Black Church in Healthcare”.

Milicia Tedder, Ph.D., LPA, is a licensed psychological associate with over 10 years of work with children, adolescents, women, and families. Dr. Tedder is a native of North Carolina and earned a master’s degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and a doctoral degree in Child and Family Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Tedder has experience working with individuals from a variety of ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, dealing with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, and psychological trauma. She is committed to accompanying people through their transitions toward positive psychological, physical, and spiritual wellness. Dr. Tedder is a trained CBT and EMDR therapist who specializes in the area of traumatic stress related to intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, and adult sexual assault. She integrates evidence-based interventions with traditional elements of compassion and understanding in an environment that fosters creative and personalized growth.

Dr. Tedder will be speaking with Dr. Livingston around academia and Black Asheville at our symposium.

Rev. Dr. Rodney S. Sadler, Jr. is the Associate Professor of Bible and Director for the Center for Social Justice and Reconciliation at Union Presbyterian Seminary For the Church in the World in Charlotte, North Carolina. He obtained his bachelors and masters of divinity at Howard University. He obtained his PhD at Duke University. His teaching experience includes courses in biblical languages, Old and New Testament interpretation, wisdom literature in the Bible, the history of religion of ancient Israel, and African American biblical interpretation. He was the managing editor of the African American Devotional Bible an served as a visiting lecturer and interim co-director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.

Harold “Woody” Neighbors, PhD, recently transitioned from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine to become the second C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health. Dr. Neighbors has over 30 years’ experience investigating the mental health of Black Americans. He was a graduate research assistant on the ground-breaking National Survey of Black Americans and co-investigator on the National Survey of American Life (NSAL). In 2010, Dr. Neighbors and his colleagues conducted a large qualitative study titled “Man Up Man Down”. Findings from the first Man Up Man Down study confirmed that Black men are almost uniformly raised to think that they should “man up” whenever faced with stressful situations.

Dr. Johnathan N. Livingston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Lead Research Faculty at the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Livingston received his doctorate in Community Psychology and, prior to attending Michigan State, he received a Master’s in African and African American psychology at Florida A&M University. His areas of interest are African American psychological well-being and the cumulative effects of racism and social inequalities on African America mental health and health disparities. Additional areas of interest include program evaluation, community development, and education reform.Dr. Livingston’s current research focuses on social and psychological factors associated with positive health and mental health outcomes for African Americans. Also, he has served as director of Outreach for the Export Grant, a project of the Julius Chambers Biomedical Bio-technical Research Institute, evaluating the effectiveness of their efforts to reduce health disparities and educate the African American Community about alcohol and substance abuse; cancer and cardiovascular disease risk factors. He has also served as Co-Director of the North Carolina Central University Institute for Children Youth and Family at NCCU and served a Senior Research Fellow at Johnson C. Smith University, Smith Institute for Applied Research. He is also currently Co-principal Investigator on the Duke NCCU partnership investigating the use of ethno drama to address health disparities among low income communities of color.
Dr. Livingston has taught classes in community, personality, and adolescent psychology, research methodology, statistics, and human growth and development. In 2001, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Michigan State University and in 2009 he received the Excellence in Teaching Award at NCCU. In 2019 he received the NCCU Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in North Carolina. He was also finalist for the Best HBCU Male faulty in U.S 2019. Also, while at NCCU he has assisted in securing over 20.3 million in grant money from federal and state agencies. He has authored and co-authored peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and newspaper articles on race, psychology, mental health, health disparities, and education as well as presented his research at several national and international conferences.

Dr. Livingston will be spea at our Symposium. His topic is “Academia, Medicine, and Black Asheville”.
