The 2nd Annual Asheville African American Health Symposium begins today with a Simulation Center experience where we will have dialogue about implicit and explicit bias in educational settings. We will also honor Dr. Bill Gist by awarding one of our team members with the “Gist Leadership Award”!

Later this evening we will have dinner and dialogue about “The Role of the Black Church in Healthcare”.

It’s going to be a full and exciting day!!

Dr. Raynard Washington is the Public Health Director at Mechklenburg County Health Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Public Health Director manages public health and environmental health activities and provides vision and direction for all public health activities in Mecklenburg County.

Dr. Washington will be speaking about “The History of Race - Epidemiology and Black Health”.

Milicia Tedder, Ph.D., LPA, is a licensed psychological associate with over 10 years of work with children, adolescents, women, and families. Dr. Tedder is a native of North Carolina and earned a master’s degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and a doctoral degree in Child and Family Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Tedder has experience working with individuals from a variety of ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, dealing with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, and psychological trauma. She is committed to accompanying people through their transitions toward positive psychological, physical, and spiritual wellness. Dr. Tedder is a trained CBT and EMDR therapist who specializes in the area of traumatic stress related to intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, and adult sexual assault. She integrates evidence-based interventions with traditional elements of compassion and understanding in an environment that fosters creative and personalized growth.

Dr. Tedder will be speaking with Dr. Livingston around academia and Black Asheville at our symposium.

Rev. Dr. Rodney S. Sadler, Jr. is the Associate Professor of Bible and Director for the Center for Social Justice and Reconciliation at Union Presbyterian Seminary For the Church in the World in Charlotte, North Carolina. He obtained his bachelors and masters of divinity at Howard University. He obtained his PhD at Duke University. His teaching experience includes courses in biblical languages, Old and New Testament interpretation, wisdom literature in the Bible, the history of religion of ancient Israel, and African American biblical interpretation. He was the managing editor of the African American Devotional Bible an served as a visiting lecturer and interim co-director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.

Rev. Dr. Sadler will be leading our dinner and dialogue on ”The Role of the Black Church in Healthcare”. Seats are limited so be sure to RSVP at www.avlaahs.net as soon as possible!
