Our very own Founder and Executive Director, Norma Duran Brown! Thank you YWCA of Asheville for celebrating her journey and over two decades of serving our region.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we highlight the work of Latine women working right in here in our community, in addition to those on a national and international stage. Norma Duran Brown, JD, is the Founder and Executive Director of UNETE, a grassroots non-profit serving Western North Carolina. Under Norma's leadership, UNETE provides community health and resource support. Norma says that the trust and wisdom of the community shines most brightly in the "dedication of our Community Health workers, who walk alongside families every day with care, dignity, and commitment."

Today el Grito de Independencia marks the beginning of Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations! Lets's honor Margarita Neri, “The Rebel Queen of Morelos”—the daughter of a Mayan woman and a Mexican general—who rose up against the oppressive Díaz regime in the early 1900s. Her bravery, and that of countless other women, men, and children, helped pave the way for Mexico’s independence in 1910.

And we join in celebrating the independence of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica—all of whom mark their freedom on this same day.

Every five years, the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities (NCCDD)creates a Five-Year State Plan. This plan helps guide its work and decide which projects to fund to improve services and supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in North Carolina. To make this plan, the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities looks closely at what people with I/DD in North Carolina need by asking for public input to better understand those needs and next week’s public input session will be with the following information:

💜 Gratitude to our CHWs! 💜

Norma Duran Brown and Jose Infanzon Chavez took a moment to celebrate UNETE’s CHWs and highlight just two of the many ways UNETE CHWs walk in community and for the community:

✨ Through their dedication and accurate referrals, UNETE CHWs helped families access $480,000 in SNAP & SunBucks benefits.
✨ With their dedication and outreach UNETE was able to proudly sponsored the Mexican Consulate visit, supporting 502 Mexican nationals in renewing passports and other vital documents.

Together, in true collaboration and solidarity, anything is possible! 🙌💜
