In North Carolina, even a little bit of ice can make walkways and streets treacherous. If you are worried about slipping or falling on the ice, please do not attempt to clear ice or snow from your sidewalk or driveway. There are local resources that can help you!

1. The best place to start is by calling NC 211 by dialing 2-1-1. You can speak with a resource specialist who can identify local groups, non-profits, or services in your specific county that assist older adults with snow removal during weather emergencies.

2. Or you can call your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA). North Carolina has 16 regional AAAs that coordinate services for older adults. Many of them keep lists of "Chore Providers" or volunteer organizations that provide free or low-cost snow maintenance. Find your local office using the map below. Stay safe everyone!

We’re proud to announce that Mimi Hayes will be our Keynote Speaker at the 2026 NC Brain Injury Conference in Wrightsville Beach, April 13–14.

Mimi Hayes is an American comedian, speaker, and author of "I’ll Be OK, It’s Just a Hole in My Head", a memoir she wrote while recovering from a brain injury at just twenty-two. Known for blending emotional precision with sharp humor, Mimi’s work explores trauma, love, disability, and identity with a voice that is both irreverent and deeply human.

Her storytelling has taken her from the page to the stage, with performances at TEDx, Denver Comedy Works, The Moth, Upright Citizens Brigade, Broadway Comedy Club, and Stand Up NY. She has opened for comedians including Jim Gaffigan and Ari Eldjárn, toured internationally with her one-woman shows I’ll Be OK and 20-Nothing, and reached global audiences through her TED Talk, “Laughter Is NOT the Best Medicine.”

Mimi’s keynote session, “Traumedy: How I Turned My Brain Injury Into a Punch Line,” explores how humor can be a powerful tool for resilience after brain injury. Drawing from her lived experience as a two-time brain hemorrhage survivor, she shows how comedy and storytelling can reduce stigma, foster connection, and offer new language for healing, inviting us to rethink recovery as a creative and deeply human process.

Hope all are staying safe and warm in NC with the sleet, snow and ice that arrived over the weekend. If you start getting antsy or restless with cabin fever, please think twice - Do I really need to go out now for that food I'm craving? :) All that is out there is going to melt and refreeze this coming week.

If you do not feel safe and steady on your feet to shovel a driveway or walkway, call a neighbor or someone else and ASK FOR HELP. Make sure that the surface is completely dry and not at risk of black ice before stepping on it.

Stay home and off the roads and walkways as long as you can. We'll be able to get back out there soon! Stay StandingStrongNC!

Stay Safe This Winter! ❄️ Winter weather can bring icy sidewalks and slippery floors, increasing the risk of falls, especially for older adults. Here are some simple tips to keep your home safe. Stay warm, stay active, and enjoy a safe winter season! 🌨️
