Trust is an overarching theme within pregnancy.
Trusting in your body.
Trusting in your baby.
Trusting in your inner strength.
Trusting in god.
It’s sad to me that the medical model of prenatal care + birth removes this practice of trust (I say “practice” because it does take practice to constantly return to the frequency of trust, especially in the great mystery of pregnancy and birth. To witness yourself in fear and anxiety as it arises, acknowledge it, and to then gently return to faith. To love).
The endless ultrasounds. The talk of induction if you go past your “due date”. The constant testing, diagnoses, the planned c sections. The fear around breastfeeding and the push to rely on formula if it doesn’t work out perfectly the first time you try. The epidurals that often lead to further medical intervention (like c section). The fear around nourishing ancestral foods like cod liver oil, egg yolks, and raw milk - and instead relying on synthetic vitamins. The circumcision. The va€€ines.
When you approach pregnancy and birth within this medical model, you drown out the spiritual experience of it all. And creating human LIFE, being the very portal for a soul to come from heaven to earth, is arguably the most spiritual experience we can go through on earth. You drown out the power of leaning into the innate wisdom of your body, of your baby. Of our ancestors that worshipped birth as the sacred act that it is.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe finding a balance is great, if that feels good for you. I personally have taken a pretty hands-off approach to my prenatal care, but I still have a team of midwives im seeing for check ups and for my home birth. I still did one ultrasound. And if following the medical model, birthing in the hospital, around pregnancy and birth feels the most safe for you, then lean into that - but don’t leave the trust at home. You know your body better than any doctor. Don’t doubt yourself if you feel the need to question things. Your intuition is a vital tool that should be utilized before what any medical textbook says.
Mama, whatever route you take, just don’t forget to trust. It’s a vital piece of this journey. 🩷
