Since 1922, the Charles George VAMC in Asheville has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. Services are available to more than 100,000 veterans living in a 19-county area of Western North Carolina. The Medical Center is named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient and member of the Cherokee Nation Charles George. This page provides a forum for learning how VA provides health care, benefits, and burial and memorial services to our nation's Veterans. The purpose of this page is for VA to post and comment on questions and concerns regarding VA's mission, and to allow veterans, service members, their spouses and families the opportunity to dialogue regarding these issues. Please note this page does not exist to provide individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. It is not continuously monitored and does not provide emergency services. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. If you are in emotional crisis, or are concerned about a Veteran or current service member, call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 (press "1"). On this page, the CGVAMC aims to create an open discussion and encourages helpful and useful comments regarding the applicable topics. If you’re considering applying for life insurance, it’s important to understand the difference between term life insurance and whole life insurance. Term life insurance covers a specific time frame, while whole life insurance provides lifelong coverage. Whole life insurance programs offer a variety of advantages including fixed premiums that don’t increase over time and a policy that can build cash value.

Veterans can access whole life coverage through VA. Veterans Affairs Life Insurance, or VALife, is a program that provides guaranteed acceptance to Veterans age 80 and under with any level of service-connected disability, even 0%.

We understand that visiting loved ones is important, especially during difficult times. However, due to the recent increase in respiratory illnesses, the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System is implementing visitor restrictions starting today.

We kindly ask for your cooperation with the following temporary guidelines:

- Unfortunately, we cannot allow children under the age of 12 to visit the facility at this time.

- Each inpatient may have up to two visitors. We recognize that special circumstances arise, and exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

- During outpatient or clinic visits, one visitor may accompany patients.

For the safety of everyone, patients exhibiting specific symptoms (fever, cough, body aches, sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting) are required to wear a mask. Visitors with any of these symptoms should prioritize their own health as well as the health of others by staying home.

We appreciate your understanding in keeping everyone safe.

This holiday season, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NC DOT) brought joy and gratitude to the Community Living Center (CLC) residents at the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System. In a heartfelt gesture, NC DOT staff fulfilled personalized Christmas wishes by providing gifts selected from each resident’s holiday wish list.

“Our Veterans deserve to feel remembered and appreciated every day, and especially during the holidays,” said Craig Doane, Chief Center for Development and Civic Engagement. “We are so thankful to NC DOT for making this season special.”

The team personally delivered these thoughtful presents to the residents, ensuring that every individual felt remembered and appreciated during this special time of year. Their visit was more than just a gift exchange—it was a moment of connection and recognition for the sacrifices our veterans have made in service to our Nation.

From cozy blankets and favorite snacks to books and hobby supplies, these thoughtful presents reflected the care and respect NC DOT has for those who served.
