Since 1922, the Charles George VAMC in Asheville has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. Services are available to more than 100,000 veterans living in a 19-county area of Western North Carolina. The Medical Center is named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient and member of the Cherokee Nation Charles George. This page provides a forum for learning

how VA provides health care, benefits, and burial and memorial services to our nation's Veterans. The purpose of this page is for VA to post and comment on questions and concerns regarding VA's mission, and to allow veterans, service members, their spouses and families the opportunity to dialogue regarding these issues. During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, the WNCVAHCS Lab team brought some Pixar‑style fun to the job with a Toy Story–inspired “Lab Story” theme and custom T‑shirts.

Behind the scenes, this team delivers accurate, timely results that help our clinicians provide the best possible care to Veterans—day in and day out. Today, they celebrated their teamwork, their pride in their work, and their commitment to go “to infinity and beyond for our patients.”

Join us in thanking our incredible lab professionals for everything they do for Veterans at the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System!

VA Golden Age Games began in 1985, long before “senior athletics” was a mainstream idea. VA recognized that aging Veterans needed more than medical care. They also needed motivation, goals, and a sense of connection. So, the Games were born with just a few hundred competitors.
Today, they’ve grown into a major event where thousands of athletes and supporters from across the country come to take part. It is a living tribute to the fact that service continues after age 50 and that strength can last a lifetime.

The Veterans Health Administration is marking 80 years of supporting Veterans of all ages and abilities just like the Golden Age Game athletes. Learn more.

During Administrative Professionals Week (April 20–24), the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System honored the administrative professionals who keep care for Veterans running smoothly. This first-ever awards ceremony recognized six outstanding team members—Kimberly Roper, Angela Bush, Kimberly Orvis, Amberli Russell, Robert Colling, and Lois Taylor—for their hard work, positive attitudes, and deep commitment to Veterans. Many more staff were nominated and show the same dedication every day, and leadership plans to continue these awards for years to come as a way to highlight the vital role administrative professionals play in serving Veterans.
