We were proud to attend the grand re-opening of the Historic Biltmore Village "fancy McDonald's" this week where Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas gifted Mission Children's Hospital an adorable new Hospitality Cart for our pediatric units. 💛 Built and decorated by the talented Greenville Woodworkers Guild, this cart was funded by the donations of WNC families during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and now offers snacks, beverages, activities and comfort items free of charge to families of children in our care.

Thank you to RMHC of the Carolinas and McDonalds, the Woodworkers Guild, the generous community members who donated, and our Mission Children's team for this incredible partnership supporting our youngest patients and their families.

Mission Hospital proudly welcomed its first baby of the new year when Jonah Thomas Roberts was born at 3:46 a.m. in the early hours of January 1, 2026. Though Jonah arrived earlier than expected, he is doing well and receiving expert care in Mission Hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Jonah was born to parents Shannon Jeffords and Travis Roberts of Marshall, North Carolina. He weighed 4 pounds, 10 ounces at birth and was originally due on February 10, 2026.

Jonah’s name holds special meaning for the family. Jonah Thomas was named in honor of both of Travis’s grandfathers, known affectionately as his “Papaws.”

“I’m terrified, but I know he is with a team that knows how to take care of him,” Shannon shared. “As a mom, you don’t think anybody can take better care of your baby than you can, but in this case, I know he’s in the best hands.”

Mission Hospital is honored to begin 2026 by celebrating the arrival of Jonah Thomas Roberts and wishes the family continued strength and joy as he grows stronger each day.

Due to the high rate of influenza in the Western North Carolina region, all Mission Health hospitals and affiliates are temporarily limiting visitation to two (2) well visitors per patient, and only those age 13 and older will be permitted to visit at this time. Exceptions to the restriction will be considered in cases such as end-of-life or pediatric/NICU patients.

We understand these restrictions may pose a hardship for some, but our utmost concern is for the health and safety of all our patients and our entire community. Visitor limitations will remain in place until reported flu-like activity decreases.

If you or a loved one is sick, please talk to your primary care provider on the best course of treatment or call our Consult-A-Nurse line at 844-706-8773.

🎅Santa visited his favorite NICU and Mission NICU's tiny new arrivals!

While no family wants to spend their baby's first Christmas in the hospital, the Mission Hospital team goes above and beyond to fill the season with warmth and cheer—complete with Santa’s visit, a cuddly stuffed animal and a “Baby’s First Christmas” ornament for each little one.

Big thank you to our Family Support Network of WNC for organizing and hosting the event, Preemies of the Carolinas for donating the handmade outfits and hats for the baby's first Christmas, the NICU staff for always taking amazing care of each baby and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus for making a special guest appearance.

Please remember to never leave items in a crib with your baby; these photos were taken under the supervision of NICU medical professionals and all items were immediately removed.

If you’re not feeling merry and bright this holiday season, you’re not alone. The holidays can be a joyful time, but they can also bring anxiety and emotional strain. Knowing the symptoms of depression can help you recognize when you’re feeling more than seasonal stress.

If you’re struggling with depression, these tips from the National Alliance on Mental Illness may help you manage it better so you can enjoy holiday festivities:

🎯 Be aware of your personal triggers.
✍ Try journaling or writing a gratitude list to shift your perspective.
📅 Do your best to avoid overscheduling – it’s okay to say no.
🛑 Set boundaries with people who make you feel negative emotions.
🧘 Make time for relaxation, deep breathing or meditation to help ease stress.
đŸ· Drink in moderation as alcohol can amplify negative emotions.

Across our broader HCA Healthcare system of care, we are part of an integrated network of mental health and wellness facilities, comprising over 50 inpatient facilities and more than 200 outpatient programs across 15 states. If you’re looking for mental health support, we’re here for you. Learn more about Mission Health's mental health and wellness services: https://bit.ly/492FBTl

Our trained pet therapy teams lend a helping paw to bring comfort and reduce anxiety for our patients, visitors and colleagues during each visit. Along with the obvious emotional benefits of adoring pets, studies have shown that the presence of animals has a positive effect on human physiology. Pet therapy can decrease a patient’s blood pressure and heart rate. But most of all, these furry friends make all of us feel loved and at ease.

Thank you to Lucy, Cheri, and all of our incredible pet therapy teams for all they do to ! Learn more at: https://bit.ly/3MVExJH
