His loved ones recall arriving scared, exhausted and hesitant -- but they say everything changed the minute they walked through the doors. From the ER to open heart surgery to the ICU and recovery, Fred's family details every small moment and comfort that our teams extended along the way.

This Valentine’s Day, our NICU was filled with extra sweetness as our smallest patients dressed up in festive Valentine’s outfits. These little hearts may be small, but they are surrounded by an incredible amount of love, strength and dedicated care every single day.

Thank you to our amazing caregivers and the Family Support Network of WNC for helping to create these safe and memorable photoshoots for our NICU babies. Thank you to Preemies of the Carolinas for treating these little ones to outfits, hats, and blankets to make this an extra special Valentine's Day.

We are so grateful to our NICU families for trusting us with their precious babies, and to our compassionate caregivers who pour their hearts into this work. From all of us at Mission Hospital, we’re sending love to our tiniest Valentines and the families cheering them on. 💗👶

❤️A heart-care first for Western North Carolina❤️

Mission Hospital is proud to be the first hospital in Western North Carolina to implant a new leadless pacemaker that can treat more patients with slow or irregular heart rhythms.

Unlike traditional pacemakers, this advanced technology is placed directly inside the heart — no wires, no chest incision, and no visible device under the skin. Even more exciting, it can now support both chambers of the heart, helping nearly 80% of patients who need dual-chamber pacing.

✨ What this means for patients:
• Fewer complications
• Less discomfort
• Faster recovery
• Fewer movement restrictions

“Being the first hospital in Western North Carolina to offer this option means our patients can receive cutting-edge care close to home,” said Dr. John Brandt of Asheville Cardiology Associates.

We’re proud to continue expanding access to advanced heart care and improving quality of life for our community. To learn more about our cardiac program, visit MissionHealth.org/Heart.
