A is a medical exam that assesses whether your child can safely participate in activities like sports, cheerleading and playing in a marching band. 🏆 Most schools, recreational leagues and other organizations require this exam annually. It involves a review of your child’s medical history and a physical exam to check for any health concerns that could be aggravated by physical activity.

At Mission Health, caring for our community extends far beyond our physical walls. Tracey Gates, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, shows yet another way that we can help people, before they ever enter the hospital, through the Rachel Silver Distracted Driving program. This program is an essential part of many local drivers ed classes and aims to teach new drivers about the dangers of distracted driving and ways to mitigate them. She covers use of cell phones, impact of additional passengers, and much more.

Did you know that in 2024, distracted driving was the cause of over 19,000 injuries throughout North Carolina? Our goal with the Rachel Silver Distracted Driving program is to reduce that number and keep our community safe. While our Emergency Room is always open, we hope to see fewer visits due to distracted driving in the coming years.

Being the only NICU in Western NC means that we see families from all over our 18 counties. Many of them are here for days to months at a time, and this can put a toll on our parents. Thankfully, we have incredible community partners that have gone out of their way to make life a little easier for these parents.

Last month, Baby Bundles - Clothing Newborns With Love, made the journey up the mountain from Charlotte to deliver hand packed baby bundles for our families in the NICU. Baby Bundles is a non-profit organization that gives roughly 4,000 "bundles" to new moms across Charlotte each year. Each bag contains 40 essential baby items from clothing for newborn to 18 months, developmental books, toys, socks, bathing items, and more. This amazing organization was so moved by Western NC and what we went through during Helene, they pledged to donate 100 baby bundles to our NICU this year in hopes to help families affected by the Hurricane.

Earlier this week, long time partner Babies Need Bottoms, delivered NICU parent care kits and NICU nurse care kits. These care kits were a project of love from the Babies Need Bottoms board who wanted to show a little extra love to the parents, caregivers, and nurses of our NICU babies. Each care kit contains self care items, snacks, and personal notes.

We couldn't be more proud to partner with such incredible organizations that are just as devoted to caring for the smallest members of our community.
