The Mountain Area Health Education Center's (MAHEC's) Continuing Education programs are designed to meet the education and training needs of health and human service professionals in medicine, nursing, dental, mental health, pharmacotherapy, allied health, and public health. We are the largest provider of continuing education in the region, serving more than 8,000 healthcare professionals each yea

r. Customized training programs can be designed to meet the needs of individual organizations and agencies and can be delivered on site. In addition to continuing education opportunities, MAHEC educates third and fourth-year medical students at its UNC School of Medicine Asheville Campus. MAHEC also runs accredited residency programs in family medicine, ob/gyn, general dentistry, pharmacotherapy, psychiatry, and surgery, as well as post-residency fellowship programs in sports medicine and hospice/palliative care. MAHEC is also the future home of the UNC Asheville/UNC Gillings School of Public Health. MAHEC provides patient care at six Family Health Centers across the region and Ob/Gyn Specialists and the Dental Health Center, which are both located at its Biltmore campus in Asheville, NC. MAHEC is part of the North Carolina AHEC system, one of the oldest and most extensive AHEC systems in the country. The NC AHEC Program evolved in an effort to address national and state concerns with the supply, distribution, retention and quality of health professionals.

The fourth season of “Just Us: Before, Birth, and Beyond” has launched! This grant-supported, MAHEC-produced podcast focuses on perinatal and community health.

• REFERRAL SPECIALIST: This position, located at MAHEC’s Enka/Candler location at Westridge Market Place, will provide business office support to the providers and patients of MAHEC health centers, including following up and tracking outgoing and external referrals in a timely manner. Basic typing, Microsoft Suite, and data entry skills are required.

• PATIENT FINANCIAL ADVOCATE: Working at our Biltmore campus, this position will manage patient account problems by working directly with patient(s) to identify payment solutions. This will include providing guidance and education on how to access discount programs, applying for Medicaid programs, and setting up payment plans. Medical office experience is preferred.

Attention: Physicians, Nurses, Pre-Hospital Emergency Personnel, Respiratory Therapists, Dentists, and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency: MAHEC offers AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Initial and Recertification Provider courses in person at our Simulation Center throughout 2025!

The next ACLS Initial Certification Provider course is Thursday, June 12, 8am-3pm.

These courses are designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, in or out of the hospital setting. The goal of the ACLS Provider course is to improve the quality of care provided to the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergency.

Examples of conditions Dr. Johnson and her team can treat include:

• ORAL MUCOSAL DISEASES, including conditions affecting the soft tissues inside the mouth that can present as ulcers, lesions, or abnormal growths.
