Hearing deeply expressed concerns from both sides inspired me to share this amazing piece by artist Melissa Allin. Here's what she wrote about her experience:
When I began this mosaic, I was surprised at the swirl of emotion that began to take shape with the glass. Each shard carried a different weight:
Grief.
Loss.
Hope.
Desperation.
Conviction.
Responsibility.
Separation.
Loneliness.
Love.
These were trailed closely by the palpable fear that they could all some day be eclipsed by defeat.
I hand cut each piece after piece of stained glass, with its fragility, imperfection, and need for great care, and I realized that this work was both a plea and a love letter. I also found there a grave realization that, without intervention, it could become a eulogy.
As I spent hour after hour intently sculpting these fragments, so reminiscent of our fractured world, into this scene - an outstretched hand shielding a single imperiled match, holding fast to the last bit of light even as what we hold dear collapses around us - an aching question arose: Are these the final flickers, or will we keep the last light alive?
