Our 250th Episode Release: From Adventure Therapy to Disaster Relief: PIVOTPoint’s Journey Amidst Turmoil
We are thrilled to share the 250th episode of "Stories from the Field: Mental Health and the Outdoors." In this special milestone episode, I reconnect with Matt Nannis, the dedicated founder of PIVOTPoint, an experiential adventure program based in Western North Carolina.
When Hurricane Helene struck, causing unprecedented devastation in Western North Carolina, PIVOTPoint faced a pivotal moment. Originally focused on adventure therapy and recovery programs, they swiftly transformed their mission to address the immediate needs of a community in crisis. Matt and his incredible team became frontline responders, providing essential mental health support, coordinating relief efforts, and bringing hope to those affected by the disaster.
In our conversation, we delve into:
• Rapid Response and Adaptation: PIVOTPoint shifted from outdoor adventure programs to becoming a crucial disaster relief organization almost overnight.
• Serving the Community: Stories of how they helped countless individuals and families by offering emotional support, coordinating supply runs, and connecting people with essential resources.
• The Human Impact: Matt shares heartfelt accounts of community members expressing gratitude, vulnerability, and resilience in the face of overwhelming challenges.
• Personal Journey: Matt opens up about his own experiences during the crisis, balancing the demands of leadership with self-care and personal well-being.
This episode is a profound exploration of how one organization's commitment to service made a significant difference during a time of extraordinary need. It's a testament to the power of adaptability, compassion, and community spirit.

Anybody gotta trailer in the E Avl area they are comfortable lending out for an out'n'back run to get socks, hand warmers, and winter hats over to St John's Episcopal Church, Asheville in Haw Creek??

Yesterday we worked with students on the practice of letting go. On what memories and objects and feelings felt too important – too precious – to put down. And if we had the courage to try. We talked about making space for new, and what students hope is just around the corner. Today’s our last day with the students of Woodson Branch Nature School. We’ll be back there Monday morning first thing for their teachers’ professional development day.

The YMCA of Western North Carolina has connected us to their ELISS programs with McDowell County middle schoolers. We’ll be working out details this morning for next week. And has been helping us navigate the best approach and schedule for programs over in the Reynolds District.

Time to work out the details of implementation and scheduling for the first round of the 60+ mental health professionals who signed up for this project as we continue to hear from multiple counties looking to provide social emotional learning and experiential activities for their students.

Thanks for the support so far. Please keep it comin’. Take good care.

Here it is, your moment of zen. Look for the helpers. They’re out there. Take a breath. It’s okay. Let yourself take a beat before you get back to it. One hand on your heart; one hand extended out to your neighbor.

Be safe y’all.

We have enough $$ for this first run now. We are gonna do this first round & will assess the most effective use of additional funds and trips back look like.

I *really* appreciate this support. Please put a pause on my Venmo until we make this run and I update this post.

Plan is to drop off this run at Making Whole. Depending on traffic, may divert to another hub if needed.
