What a fantastic day we had on Saturday at Penland Craft School Community Day. Our Deerfield residents explored open studios and enjoyed hands-on crafting experiences, all under absolutely beautiful weather.

📌 Foundation Friday

On February 13, Deerfield residents, supporters, and partners gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of our new Day Respite program, now aptly named The Gathering Place. The new name reflects what the space truly represents: a welcoming environment for connection, comfort, and community.

This program was made possible through the generosity of our donors, whose support turned a vision into reality. We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful project.

💙 Community in Action at Deerfield! 💙

The Deerfield Charitable Foundation was proud to host a Volunteer Engagement Expo that brought together our incredible residents and inspiring community partners. From on‑campus opportunities to ways to serve beyond our gates, the expo showcased so many meaningful paths to make a difference.

We’re deeply thankful to the outside organizations who spent time with us and shared the important work they do—and to our residents whose enthusiasm for service makes Deerfield such a special place. Together, we celebrated impact, connection, and the power of volunteering to bring people together.
Here’s to growing our volunteer community and continuing this amazing work together!

We often post about events at Deerfield, but today’s post is a bit different, more personal and (at least for this author) a little bit raw. All of us who post on behalf of Deerfield love the opportunity to share glimpses of this remarkable community with a larger audience through social media. Much of what we post tells the story of our community, the events, the talented people, the awards, and the fun. Behind all of those very real parts of Deerfield, however, is an incredible commitment to care.

Our residents provide us with the extraordinary privilege of living their lives with them including - and inevitably - walking through final days. Libby Bush, our President and CEO, calls it our “sacred ground.” And sacred indeed it is for the hundreds on our team who pour themselves into creating meaningful moments across every part of campus and the entire continuum of care.

We feel the weight of that sacred ground deeply and today we paused to acknowledge that with a special service for our healthcare team. Missy, Deerfield chaplain and a wonderful part of spiritual life, walked us through a time of reflection, silence, song and remembrance while Father Lin, our Director of Spiritual Life, read the names of residents who have passed on in the past year.

It was quiet and tear-filled, with hugs and warmth and that special time that can only come when caring people are united in genuine feeling. It was extraordinary. It was the essence of Deerfield.

So as you read about the energy, the beauty, the events, the food, the fun, the incredible spirit and generosity of this place, please know that every part of our commitment to this campus beats with a heart for our people (residents and employees alike), a deep sense of care and - as we head into Valentine’s weekend - absolute love.

🎉 BIG, GIANT CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉
We’re thrilled to celebrate the Carolina Mountain Club for fully meeting our $50,000 challenge grant!

In July 2025, Deerfield Charitable Foundation challenged CMC to match $50,000 of our $100,000 gift—and they did it! This incredible show of commitment, especially in the wake of post-Helene recovery work, strengthens CMC’s endowment and ensures their mission will thrive for the next 100 years.

Here’s to stewardship, resilience, and a deep love for our mountains. 🌄👏

The end of January brought National Activity Professionals’ Week and Deerfield has the very best! We are happy to take a moment to show our deep appreciation for Deerfield's Activities Teams.

The joy, purpose, connection, and sense of community they bring to our residents’ lives truly cannot be measured or defined. They help to create moments that turn into memories, spark smiles on difficult days, and provide comfort, laughter, and engagement in ways that reach far beyond a schedule or calendar.

Please know how deeply appreciated you are, not only for the programs you create, but for the heart, creativity, care and dedication you bring every single day. Our residents' lives are brighter, warmer, and more joyful because of you!

For all those following the world’s most famous weather-focused rodent, Punxsutawney Phil is predicting six more weeks of winter. Deerfield resident photographer Peter R. captured some of winter’s magic on campus over the weekend. Meanwhile there’s been no sign lately of our resident campus bears, who we are hoping will provide an alternative prediction of a return to 60 degrees and sunny any day now and will summarily tell Punxsutawney Phil to take a hike. Hikes we love. All this snow? You tell us - is wintry weather friend or foe?

Deerfield is covered in a blanket of white with snow still falling. The idyllic views are also bringing a bite, with subzero temperatures hanging on after the snowfall ends. In the midst of the wintertime magic, our grounds, maintenance and healthcare teams are busy keeping us safe and cared for while dining is serving up comfort food with Bistro takeout available from 10a to 3p today and tomorrow and assisted and healthcare dining prepped and ready for all regular meal service. Stay safe, stay warm and soak in the beauty from the comfort of your home.
