Exciting news from AFC!

Our perinatal counselor, Lauren Wilde, was selected for the NC Maternal Mental Health Fellowship and is one of only six clinicians from Western North Carolina chosen for this prestigious training.

Her advanced work will focus on the intersection of maternal mental health and substance use, deepening the specialized care AFC is able to offer mothers and families in our community.

We’re so proud of Lauren and grateful to continue growing AFC’s expertise in the areas our local families need most!

This post has been getting a lot of attention and thoughtful responses over the past few days and I think it’s because it names something so many of us experience.

If you’ve ever found yourself working really hard in a relationship…or pulling away when things feel off…you might see yourself in this.

It’s a reflection on a moment that surprised me, what I learned from it, and how so many of us get caught in this same relational dance.

If you haven’t read it yet, I’d love for you to check it out 💛

Instead of asking, “How do we fix this?” try asking, “What parts are we protecting right now?”

Our counselor Allan Day just published a beautiful new piece on the Asheville Family Counseling blog.

He reflects on rediscovering old cassette recordings from a longtime musical partner and friend - and the waves of grief that arose after his death. It’s a thoughtful meditation on how loss changes the way we listen to our lives, and how therapy can help us make sense of that shift.

When we lose someone and something in our lives, it can feel arresting; we may struggle to catch our breath to make sense of it.

“I don’t have a choice.”

When people say this in relationships, what they often mean is:
“I don’t have any good choice without loss.”

If you’re standing at a relationship crossroads - wondering whether to stay, leave, or keep hoping things will change - I wrote something for you.

When there are no good choices, the task is not to find the perfect answer but to choose the path you can live with and then care for yourself as you walk it.

What does it feel like to be “traveling up the down escalator” in your own life?

In his latest blog, our wonderful counselor, Allan Day, reflects on how post-punk music once gave language to his early experiences of depression, identity formation, and longing for meaning - long before mental health had the visibility it does today.

He explores how major life transitions - illness, grief, divorce, career shifts - can stir deep questions about who we are and what matters most. He also shares how therapy can offer not just conversation, but experiential pathways (mindfulness, music, art, movement) when talking alone isn’t enough.

While there is no magic pill for suffering, there is hope – not in the illusion of a perfect life, but in one that reflects meaning, ease, and genuineness.

Every so often, a story comes into my practice that highlights something important about human behavior, trauma, and the parts of us that drive harmful actions. I'd love for you to read this and share your thoughts!

Sociopathic parts begin with warmth, charisma, and an uncanny ability to make you feel seen. By the time the water is boiling, you have no idea how things got so unsafe so fast.

I'm excited to share that AFC's own Bex Langstaff wrote a beautiful blog post on identity, authenticity, and the courage it takes to ask, “Who am I, really?”

Please read and share!

As I grew older, I realized just how many of us carry these invisible rules about who we’re supposed to be.

I’m excited to share that Asheville Family Counseling has applied for the .

We’ve built something rare in the mental health field: a true safety net for our clinicians and the families we serve. Our Reserve Fund ensures that when crises hit, whether a natural disaster like Hurricane Helene last fall or a sudden insurance disruption, our clinicians stay paid and our clients stay supported. This fund was decimated after Helene, and the Gusto grant would help us rebuild it so we can continue protecting our team, providing uninterrupted care, and creating new programs like our Quirky Kids Camp for PDA children (Pathological Demand Avoidance, or what we at AFC lovingly call Persistent Desire for Autonomy) and other neurodivergent kids.

As a trusted resource for neurodivergent and PDA kids, we see each day how deeply these children long for understanding and connection. Many have never had a space where they truly belong. When they finally feel seen, safe, and welcomed as they are, the impact is often life-changing for them and their families.

I’m grateful to for uplifting small businesses that care deeply about their people and their communities.
