Back bending poses can be done in a way that helps us notice the “stillness” amidst the action. Action and stillness are not opposites, but can be practiced in a way that brings awareness to and incorporates both qualities.

Explore these qualities with Cathy tomorrow, Sunday, August 17, from 11 am - 12:30 pm.

Being present in body, mind, and breath helps us open to light, love, and peace. A forward bending practice can allow us to maintain inner stability in times of trouble.

Join Cathy on Sunday, August 10, from 11 am - 12:30 pm for some much needed inner peace.

We aren't exaggerating when we say kirtan can be transformative. In a world where many are shamed for sharing their voices, gathering together to sing without judgments on "good" or "bad" can be liberating.

Have you participated in kirtan before? What are your reflections on the practice?

In a yoga practice we explore the body, mind, and the breath--and how they influence one another. In a class that focuses on standing poses, we primarily start with the body and observe how it effects our state of mind and the breath.

In the practice of backward extensions, it is important to keep the lumbar spine long and curl from the dorsal spine. This brings awareness to the back and front of the heart center where the seat of the soul is found in the body.

Join Cathy this Sunday, July 20, from 11 am-12:30 pm.

What can an asymmetrical pose teach us about alignment and extension of the spine? We learn how to adjust so we can find that sense of stillness no matter what position we are in. Yoga teaches us in a practical way to find stillness no matter what life delivers.

There are many ways to modify an asana to practice poses that may be inaccessible or feel unsafe. When Lindsay showed up to practice, she was feeling tired but still wanted to do an inversion. She felt like she might collapse on her neck if she did full Sirsasana, so she went with a supported pose at the ropes. Join Lindsay for classes at 10am on Wednesday or Saturday, or check out our full schedule for all class times (link in bio). All of our Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers are ready to help you explore your practice.

In a restorative yoga class, we use the body and breath to quiet the mind. This gives us a fertile opportunity to see what arises beneath it all and connect with what Mr. Iyengar called our “spark of divinity.“

Backward extensions are a wonderful way to open the chest and fill it with Prana or life force. The challenge for many students is to do this without over arching the lower back. Iyengar Yoga provides clear instructions and variations with props so that students can go deeply into this or any pose and receive the benefits of the practice without experiencing pain or injury.

During forward extensions there is an emphasis on the back body. We can visualize the breath in the back of the lungs and ribs as a way to focus the mind. Then we lift from the sacrum and keep the chest open.
