Looking for quality information on the measles outbreak now found in Asheville that is not fear-mongering but is also trustworthy? Here it is.

1. What is measles?
Measles is a very contagious virus, especially concerning for children. Symptoms are typically common cold symptoms but with a rash. However, for some children can require hospitalization for pneumonia/respiratory failure.

2. What to do if your child has symptoms?
If your child has these symptoms or is exposed to someone with known measles, let their family doctor/pediatrician know right away. They can do a nasal swab urine test. The health department can also help determine if vitamin A treatment, an MMR vaccine, or antibody is appropriate.

3. Am I immune?
Immunity is based on being up to date with the MMR vaccines (given at 12–15 months and 3–5 years), not blood tests. CDC isn’t recommending routine immunity testing or extra vaccines at this time unless you have a exposure to someone with confirmed measles or cannot provide documentation of MMR vaccines.

Measles has been seen in Asheville, and we’ll stay prepared without panicking.

Short in height, tall on life-long learning:

Dr. Catherine Lok attended the annual NCAFP North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, Inc. family physician conference at The Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa, a tradition that has spanned more than 35 years.

The conference included a panel discussion on primary care in North Carolina with senators/representatives from both sides of the aisle, as well as insights from Dr. Devdutta Sangvai of the NCDHHS.

Thank you to the NCAFP for hosting this valuable event. Dr. Lok also completed over 20 hours of continuing education, continuing her commitment to lifelong learning and staying current with emerging evidence.
