Most of your day is spent sitting.
But your posture isn’t shaped by how you sit when you’re “trying” — it’s shaped by how you sit when you’re not thinking about it.
At your desk.
On the couch.
In the car.
Crossed legs. Leaning to one side. Sitting on your pockets instead of your sit bones. These small habits add up — and they quietly shape how your spine adapts over time.
Today isn’t about fixing anything.
It’s about noticing patterns.
Because once you understand what your body defaults to, pain and tension start to make a lot more sense.
👉 Watch the video and start observing — no correcting required.

Strengthening your core is often one of the first things people try for low back pain - and that makes sense.

A strong core is an essential piece of the puzzle. It helps support movement and reduce strain.
But strength alone can’t compensate for how the spine is shaped or how load is being carried.

When the low back lacks its natural curve, core muscles often have to work overtime just to hold posture. Fatigue sets in faster, and the spine becomes more reactive to everyday stress — even in people who exercise regularly.

That’s why some people do “all the right things” and still deal with low back pain that keeps coming back.
Strength supports the system. Alignment determines how stable that system actually is.

Later this week, we’ll break down how lumbar alignment affects disc loading and why low back pain often doesn’t stay gone.

Massage therapist! Proper body mechanics keep you strong and prevent pain injury. Check out Melissa D. Cope CE classes to up your game!

Easy Deep work uses your body weight, so you don't hurt of wear out smaller muscles in your arms and hands. AND to do it in a way that avoids injury, you need to properly stack your joints and often hinge at your hips when you use your forearm or elbow.

My Easy Deep Tissue class takes you through a full body massage - no thumbs, no kneading - and helps you tweak YOUR current massage groove, to reduce wear and tear on your body.

There are TWO opportunities to take this class this spring:

"I recently took Melissa’s easy deep tissue 2-day course. As a provider for over 15 years, I was hoping the class would be a good reminder of proper body mechanics. Melissa is not only incredibly proficient as a teacher but her knowledge and level of skill in the field are top quality!" -L.K., LMBT

Most people don’t think about posture when their body feels stable.
When the spine is doing its job well, load is distributed quietly and movement feels effortless. There’s nothing to notice — because nothing is failing.
Pain tends to show up when the body can no longer manage the same demands.
And when symptoms ease, it’s easy to assume the system is stable again — even if nothing about how the spine is carrying load has actually changed.
This week, we’re focusing on the low back and its role in stability:
why low back pain often returns,
why flare-ups happen after “normal” activities,
and why a spine that lacks support becomes reactive over time.
Low back pain that doesn’t stay gone is rarely random.
It often reflects an underlying structural alignment or orientation that hasn’t been accounted for.

Your water deserves an upgrade.

Clean Hydration is my go-to when I want more than just plain water—real electrolytes, real minerals, and zero junk. No sugar, no dyes, no “natural flavors”, no citric acid (unheard of!) … just Himalayan sea salt and real dehydrated citrus to help combat fatigue, support performance, and keep you feeling steady through your day.

It’s the simplest habit with a big payoff: better hydration, fewer cramps, clearer head. One scoop in your water bottle, and you’re actually fueling your body, not just flavoring your drink.

Who else is making clean hydration a non-negotiable this year? 👇

Massage and stretching can help calm tight muscles, but they don’t always change why your neck is working so hard.
When posture stays the same, symptoms often return.
Understanding the difference between symptom relief and structural support is key to breaking the cycle of recurring neck pain.

Forward head posture doesn’t just affect how you look — it changes how your body carries load.

When the head drifts forward, muscles work harder, joints absorb more stress, and relief often becomes temporary instead of lasting.

That’s why stretching or massage can feel good…
but symptoms still return.

This week, we’re not trying to fix anything.
We’re starting with awareness.

Notice:
• When your head drifts forward
• Where tension builds first
• How long it takes before symptoms show up

Pain is your body’s warning sign —
posture explains why it keeps showing up.

Awareness is the foundation for change.

We’re starting the year by going back to the basics: posture awareness.
Before posture can create change, the problem has to be understood.
And most of the time, posture isn’t something you’re consciously thinking about, it’s what your body defaults to when you’re tired, distracted, or relaxed.
That’s why simple awareness tools, like a mirror check, can be so helpful. They give you a clearer picture of how your body naturally stacks, balances, and holds itself against gravity over time.
This month, we’ll be breaking posture down into simple, approachable steps, starting with awareness, so you can better understand what your body has adapted to and why certain patterns (like neck tension or recurring pain) keep showing up.
This is where the foundation begins.
