10/11/2024: Message of Gratitude
OFD Patients,
During times of loss and grief, one of the greatest tools for resilience building available to us humans is the practice of expressing gratitude for the many blessings within our midst.
After an extremely tough 2 weeks for our region, with many of us bearing witness to tragic loss of life, loss of homes, businesses and other material losses, not to mention the dramatic loss to our tree canopy and environment, like many of you I find myself in a reflective mood. Specifically, I find myself awash in gratitude. As this week comes to a close, I would like to share what I am most grateful for in this moment. Thank you for this indulgence.
On a micro level………
I am grateful that each of the OFD staff and physicians (and our families) have survived this terrible storm, suffering only material loss.
I am grateful that our office building was not damaged or flooded during the storm allowing us to continue to provide care to our patients.
I am grateful to Griffin Waste Services who have provided us with temporary toilet and sanitation solutions during this time. I am also grateful that the practice has power and internet when so many in our community are still without these services.
I am grateful for our staff who have worked tirelessly to reschedule appointments and have helped manage the various medical needs of our patients.
On a macro level………
I am grateful for the incredible collaboration within the medical community including our hospitals who have rallied in sharing resources and engineering new solutions all in the service of the most vulnerable in our community – the sick, infirmed and broken among us.
I am grateful for our elected officials, city, county, state and federal who have put our region at the top of their priority list, leveraging all of the available resources to care for our citizens and help us to begin the long process of recovery and repair.
I am grateful for the innumerable examples of our common humanity and love and caring for each other on full display at churches, community centers, schools, public spaces and so many other places demonstrating an endless supply of donations, volunteerism and empathy for each other. While it is unfortunate to realize that it took a calamity such as Hurricane Helene to reveal what we always knew was there below the surface, it feels good to be proven right in this regard.
Amid the devastation, so many blessings and so much to be grateful for.
Wishing you all a peaceful and restful weekend and the enduring strength to remember that with each passing day and week, things in our beautiful region will continue to slowly come closer to normal.
Dr. Mike
