Here's important info about an initiative to support safer, healthier outcomes for new mothers in the weeks after childbirth.

NC Department of Health and Human Services recently launched the “I Gave Birth” campaign to raise awareness of post-birth warning signs and improve recognition of symptoms that are not normal in the postpartum period.

Here's how it works: After giving birth at participating hospitals, mothers receive education along with a teal-colored silicone bracelet to wear for the first 6–8 weeks—serving as a visual reminder to them, their families, and their care teams.

Why this matters:
💛 2 out of 3 pregnancy-related deaths occur within 42 days after birth.
💛 87% of maternal deaths in NC were deemed preventable (2018–2020 review).
💛 Symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, severe headache, fever, heavy bleeding, or severe swelling are not normal after birth and require immediate care.
💛 Postpartum depression most often appears 4–8 weeks after birth—and affects 1 in 5 women.

By focusing on the “fourth trimester,” the campaign ensures new mothers receive the timely support and care they need.

The year after giving birth is a high-risk period. Dismissing symptoms as "normal" can be deadly. A severe headache might seem like exhaustion, but it could mean dangerously high blood pressure or postpartum preeclampsia.

If you're postpartum and experiencing a severe headache with vision changes, call your doctor now.

If you were given a teal "I GAVE BIRTH' bracelet after giving birth, wear it so medical professionals know your symptoms are significant.

Share so others recognize what the teal bracelet means.
-----------

The year after giving birth is a critical health period, and ignoring symptoms could be fatal. Don't assume chest pain is only anxiety. If you're postpartum, it could be a sign of blood clots or a cardiac emergency.
🚨 Call 911.
This could be life-threatening. If you were given a teal bracelet after giving birth, wear it so medical professionals know your symptoms are significant.
💙 Share so others recognize what the teal bracelet means.

The weeks after giving birth matter just as much as pregnancy. 💙

The NC Department of Health and Human Services is shining a light on the “fourth trimester”—the critical first 6–8 weeks after childbirth—through its “I Gave Birth” campaign. This initiative helps new moms recognize important physical and mental health warning signs and connects them to the care and support they need.

By partnering with hospitals and providers across North Carolina, the campaign is helping ensure safer, healthier postpartum experiences for mothers statewide. MAHEC supports the implementation of this initiative in the 19 westernmost counties of NC, designated as Region 1.
