You might have a touch of the Winter Blues, or you might not be aware that you have more marked depression, referred to as Fall-Winter Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.

If it’s mild, these suggestions might help, but if it seems more like depression, you should see your medical care provider. If you have a diagnosis of depression, it might worsen in winter so again, communicate with your doctor.

Increasing daytime light, getting outside, exercise, increasing consumption of plants and fiber, cognitive behavioral therapy and avoiding light from devices in the evening are all of benefit. You could also discuss vitamin D supplementation and morning phototherapy (light box-at least 10,000 lux) with your doctor.

I am a fan of the Heart Center Meditation which I learned from Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson during my training at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr Chiasson studied the meditation with Dr. William Brugh Joy.

The Heart Center Meditation is an easy way to reach a meditative state. You may have experienced a similar state during a religious practice. If meditation is practiced regularly, one can return to a meditative state anytime. In this case, it’s a lovely resource to drop into the Heart Center whenever needed.

The music we frequently use is the Heart Chakra Meditation by Karunesh.
The Heart Center Meditation is a moving meditation, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself moving.

The four attributes of the heart center are:
compassion
innate harmony
healing presence
unconditional love

Meditation has so many health benefits including decreasing stress, pain, anxiety, and depression as well as improving blood pressure, focus, concentration and overall well-being.

See if you want to give this one a try.

Missing you dear Mom! You were so amazing in so many ways. I’m looking at that sweater on .sarai. How did you knit, crochet, sew…without a pattern? You made us the most darling clothes. I remember in high school when you and I would draw something and then you would just make it! My friends would ask where I got my outfit, dress…and I would reply, “my mom made it.” We were so so fortunate to have your love. …thinking of you today and every day.🩵

Seeing curved shapes and fractals is calming for our nervous system as is being outside. Stress hormones are lowered, our autonomic nervous system balances away from the sympathetic flight or flight to the parasympathetic rest, digest. Rest your eyes on something in nature, take a few deep breaths and slow down.

Blue-eyed grass
The color green is so beneficial for our health. Exposure to green spaces reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. It lowers blood pressure and heart rate, so it’s good for our cardiovascular health. Take a little break and go outside and rest your eyes on the green of spring.

Some pink wood sorrel. It’s in the oxalis family ,edible, rich in vitamin C. I have not eaten the pink one, but do remember eating the leaves of the one with the yellow flowers when we were playing outside as children. It was the perfect snack. That sour taste! It can be added to soup or salads. Think of it as a garnish and have it it in moderation because it contains a pretty high amount of oxalic acid (hence the name )which can be irritating and is not good for people with certain medical conditions.
