We are thrilled to recognize Van Tomlinson as our 2025/2026 Communications Specialist of the Year. This year’s nominations described him as someone who serves with “exceptional dedication, professionalism, and positivity,” and as “a genuinely uplifting presence within our team.” He approaches every interaction “with kindness and courtesy,” ensuring “everyone feels heard and respected,” and his calm, easygoing personality brings steadiness to even the busiest days. Operationally, he is “the kind of person you can rely on fully,” someone who “does the right thing without being asked,” and consistently communicates with clarity and professionalism. As one nomination put it best: “Any organization would be fortunate to have someone of his character and capability.” Congratulations, Van — and thank you for the heart, integrity, and positivity you bring to our MedCom and MAMA family.

The Faces Behind the Mics 🎧🚁🚑
This week, we celebrate the heartbeat of our operation — the voices you hear, the calm in the chaos, and the unseen strength behind every call.
Our MAMA MedCom Team is more than a communications center… we are family. Bound by purpose, driven by service, and committed to every patient, every crew, every mission — air and ground.
From coordinating life-saving flights to tracking every mile on the road, this team shows up with precision, passion, and pride.
Pride in the Patch isn’t just something we wear — it’s who we are.
To the faces behind the mics, thank you for being the constant when everything else is moving fast. Your voices guide, your decisions matter, and your dedication never goes unnoticed.
💚 Happy National Telecommunicators Week

Our hearts are heavy today with the loss of our friend Chris Dorsey. He was a true hero, dedicated servant, and such a lovely man. We will miss his smile, his laugh, and his wit. Our prayers go out to Chief Dorsey’s family, Reems Creek Fire Department, and Buncombe County EMS.

👏🏼 Well deserved recognition for one of our teammates who keeps the whole operation running. MAMA MedCom is the heartbeat of our system by coordinating aircraft, ground units, and managing other resources all while staying the calm in the middle of the chaos. Shout out to our very own Steve for receiving this wonderful recognition! 🎉

Here at Commlink, we encourage peer recognition and taking the time to acknowledge the people who make a meaningful impact to their Communications Center Team. The following was shared by Communications Center Supervisor Dusty Blumbergs recognizing Steve Poland and the tremendous value he brings to the MAMA - Mountain Area Medical Airlift Medcom program.

"The level of appreciation I have for Steven Poland and everything he brings to the MAMA Medcom program is immeasurable. With forty years of experience in the EMS and flight industry, his depth of knowledge is unmatched. He approaches every task with precision and care, creating detailed training documents, maps, and resources that strengthen our entire team.

One of Steve’s greatest strengths is the way he embraces change. In an environment where processes, technology, and expectations evolve constantly, he not only adapts—he leads. He brings others with him through every transition, offering guidance, clarity, and encouragement so the entire team can move forward with confidence.

I often wish there were more I could do to show him just how much his dedication means. My hope is that he truly understands the impact he has on everyone he encounters. Steve is not only an invaluable asset to our program—he’s a mentor, a leader, and a steady source of excellence.

And on top of all that, he captures the most beautiful photos of our aircraft and ground trucks, showcasing our work with pride and artistry."

Way to go Steve! You have clearly made a tremendous impact on the MAMA Medcom program, we’re proud to have you as a part of the Commlink team and a contributor to enhancing education and networking for Critical Care Communications Specialists.

As our own little shout-out, we would like to thank Dusty for recognizing Steve, Dusty never misses a chance to recognize her team, advocate for them, and is what we at CommLink like to call a Champion for Morale at the MAMA Communications Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

🔍 A little behind-the-scenes look at MAMA 2 🚁

Our mechanics are currently completing a 1,000-hour inspection, which means the helicopter is partially disassembled so they can inspect nearly every inch of the aircraft: from the rotor system to the airframe and other critical components.

It's incredibly detailed work that requires all hands-on-deck and a reminder of just how much happens behind the scenes to keep our aircraft safe and mission-ready!

While MAMA 2 is in the hangar getting some well-deserved attention, we're flying in the spare aircraft and continuing to respond to calls as usual.

Huge appreciation for the Metro Aviation maintenance team whose expertise and meticulous work keep us safely in the air!
