New documents shed light on Emergency Department death earlier this year.

"HCA Healthcare-owned Mission was found in violation of federal emergency care regulations that could have resulted in a loss of federal funding, a potentially devastating blow to the region’s largest health care provider."

A patient who died in February after calling for help in a Mission Hospital emergency department bathroom went 29 minutes with no response as multiple staff members passed by the door with a call light flashing above, according to documents obtained by Asheville Watchdog. By the time an employee ent...

Cardiac nurse Kerri Wilson calls the DHHS findings “disappointing.”

“We’ve been screaming from the mountaintops: ‘This is what’s wrong. This is why these things happen,’” Wilson told CPP.

“And yet, when the agencies come in and look at things, they’re able to scapegoat it somehow, and not hold the hospital responsible for the negligent situations they put us in. And we still see those scenarios happening daily.”

Mission Health parent company HCA can point to NC mountain hospital group's progress despite adversity. But critics also have plenty to say.

Statement from Reclaim Healthcare WNC in Response to DHHS Findings at HCA’s Mission Hospital

(June 20, 2025) –

Reclaim Healthcare WNC knows that, despite the recent finding of no deficiencies by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, the operating conditions at Mission Hospital continue to put patients at risk. While HCA might be able to comply with the minimum federal regulatory standards of care, Reclaim remains deeply concerned about the day-to-day operations at Mission under HCA’s management.

We are following up with DHHS to better understand how the 35 incidents they came to investigate, many of which we reported to them, did not rise to the level of censure.

While patients do sometimes receive excellent care at Mission thanks to the outstanding staff, we also know that providers continue to leave due to untenable working conditions, especially in the ER. As a result, the hospital continues to rely heavily on traveling nurses, which perpetuates a workplace that chases away doctors and nurses and is bad for patient safety.

Nurses and doctors at Mission continue to bravely speak out about the dangerously low staffing levels and unsafe conditions, while reports of substandard care continue to come into Reclaim on a weekly basis. We will continue to report incidents of substandard care to state and federal regulators and to shine a light on a hospital system that is still not reliably and consistently serving our community.

“Dogwood’s job is to monitor HCA’s compliance with the Asset Purchase Agreement, and Dogwood’s new Independent Monitor found HCA to be out of compliance with its commitments last year. We are encouraged by the IM’s approach and look forward to their new report this summer. We know that quality of care at Mission continues to be a hot button issue in our community, and it’s critical that community members attend and share their concerns directly to the IM, the Attorney General’s staff, DHHS, and HCA,” says Reclaim Board Chair, Julie Mayfield.
