In traditional Chinese medicine, the Earth element represents our ability to take care of ourselves—to absorb what's good and release what we don't need. This applies to everything: the food we eat, the air we breathe, even the experiences we process each day.

When your digestive system isn't working harmoniously, it affects more than just your stomach. You might notice:
∙Bloating, irregular digestion, or food sensitivities
∙A tendency to worry or get stuck in repetitive thoughts
∙Difficulty moving on from situations or emotions

This happens because in Chinese medicine, your Spleen and Stomach don't just digest food—they also help you process life itself.

There's an elegant acupuncture protocol that helps restore this natural balance, the three triangles approach. It uses nine carefully selected points arranged in three "triangles," each addressing a different level of your digestive system:

The First Triangle strengthens your core digestive power—building your body's ability to transform food into energy.

The Second Triangle releases emotional tension and the "heat" that can come from holding onto bitterness or frustration.

The Third Triangle clears the pathway so everything can flow smoothly through your system.

What makes this treatment special is the intentional sequence: needles are placed one by one in a specific order, then removed in reverse, like carefully unwinding a knot.

The Deeper Healing:

When your body remembers how to separate what nourishes you from what doesn't serve you anymore, something shifts. Your digestion improves, yes—but so does your relationship with worry. You naturally begin to hold onto less, trust more, and move through life with greater ease.

We received a special delivery from NC State University's Department of Horticultural Sciences.

The NC Alternative Crops & Organics Program , based in the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC, provided samples of 9 Chinese herbs that were locally grown.

We plan to analyze them next to the same herbal material we have bought from our primary whole herb supplier Spring Wind , and note their different characteristics. After a visual analysis, we will compare water-based extractions of the two sources for aroma, flavor, and potency.

We are excited to share our experience!

”The Qi of the season is in the Sky.”

The sun’s projection onto the Earth has reached the angle and length of illumination that stimulates the beginnings of Spring. 🌱

Today is the beginning of 立春 (Li Chun ), ”Stand Spring” which refers to the first month of Spring and the beginning of the New Year in the Chinese Calendar. The days are noticeably longer, and the Sun is perceptibly higher on the horizon. This Chinese New Year brings the Qi of the Fire Horse.

The Horse in the Chinese Zodiac belongs to the Fire element. 🔥

The astrological forecast for this year has an abundance of Fire. The virtues of Fire include creativity, inspiration, passion, and vision. The provocations include consumption, restlessness, temperament, and hyperactivity. The element of Fire is destined to have a great impact on life this year. The time, day, month, and year you were born can shed light on whether this will be a year when it is easier to harness virtue or if you need to brace for turbulence. Regardless of your zodiac sign, “success comes from aligning yourself with the realities of the moment,“ according to Team Joey Yap .

This point lives on the Kidney channel and connects Kidney energy (stillness, faith in something bigger) with Heart energy (spirit, rest). It soothes you into quality sleep and helps you observe yourself with gentleness. 🌱

But here’s what makes this point special: 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

Like a guest in your own experience, you step back and see through fresh eyes—curious, open, witnessing rather than controlling.

Try this point when you need 👇

- Distance from your own story
- To soften self-judgment

We purchased 1 pound of Jing Jie 荆芥 Schizonepeta tenuifolia from Jake's Farm in Candler, NC. We are super excited to have a source for this high-quality herbal material right here in Buncombe County.

It is an important herb for treating skin conditions, especially when itching is present. It is also used frequently in formulas for acute respiratory ailments. Margaret Bloomquist, research scholar for the NC Alternative Crops & Organics Program, thanks for the special delivery!

Jeanine Davis (), thanks for your work, leadership, and dedication to the NC Alternative Crops & Organics Program. It is easy to see the quality difference between this locally grown herb versus herb that has been stored for a much longer period and transported from China to WNC.

The brown material in the third photo is the same plant from a high-quality vendor, but it had to travel from China before arriving at our apothecary to be used in formulations.

Josh had some fun growing indoor mushrooms recently 🍄‍🟫

He got this mushroom fruiting block from North Spore . They grew so fast! In less than 10 days, a nice crop of oyster mushrooms was ready to harvest.

This simple project not only gave him a superfood to use in the kitchen, but it also felt like an extension of the growing season. While the outdoor bounty is at rest, preparing for the coming season, it was enjoyable to watch something grow and thrive indoors.

In Daoist tradition, water reflects the qualities we seek when life feels uncertain: mystery, wisdom, and innate direction. Water always knows where to flow—not in straight lines, but in natural rhythms that honor the path of least resistance.

Watch how a river moves around obstacles, gradually smoothing even the largest boulders in its path. This is nature's reminder to conserve our energy and trust that something greater is guiding us toward what we need. 🌊

This winter, try this simple practice: Find a stream, river, or body of water. Sit quietly beside it. Let visions and thoughts flow to you without forcing them. Allow the water to clear what you've been holding onto and bring you back to center.

Great news for chronic back pain sufferers 65 and older 🌿

A recent Harvard Medical School analysis found that acupuncture significantly improved pain relief for older adults with chronic low back pain—especially when combined with usual care like medication or physical therapy.

The research showed acupuncture provided meaningful relief where other treatments alone weren't enough. For many patients, this meant reduced pain, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life, all without the need for additional medications.

Why this matters: Chronic pain doesn't have to be "just part of aging." Your body still has the capacity to heal and reorganize—sometimes it just needs the right support.

With over 20 years of clinical experience treating chronic pain conditions, we understand how debilitating low back pain can be. We'll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Finding Balance: Where Water Meets Fire 🌊 🔥

In traditional Chinese medicine, we talk about the body's natural elements—and two of the most important are water and fire. Think of water as your foundation, the deep reserves that sustain you. Fire represents your vitality, warmth, and emotional spirit.

Your body has an elegant internal system for keeping these elements in harmony. Water energy rises up your spine to nourish your heart, while fire energy descends down to support your kidneys and other vital systems. When this circulation flows smoothly, you feel balanced—emotionally grounded and physically energized.

The Bladder Channel: Your Body's Communication Highway

Along your upper back, there are special acupuncture points that act as bridges between these energies. Three particularly powerful points sit near your shoulder blades:

BL 13 connects to your lungs and helps protect your immune system
BL 14 relates to your heart's protective layer, safeguarding your emotional well-being
BL 15 corresponds directly to your heart—considered the emperor of all organs

These points do something remarkable: they help you process and release emotions while protecting what matters most. They support the conversation between who you were born to be and who life has shaped you into becoming.

When we work with these points during treatment, we're helping your body tap into its natural wisdom—supporting both your hormonal balance and emotional resilience, so you can navigate life with greater ease.

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas aren't just historical remedies—they're being transformed into rigorously tested pharmaceutical products that meet international standards. 🌎

Two standout examples show how this works:

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 — A formula using Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) that's been used for centuries to treat heart conditions. Modern extraction technology has turned this traditional remedy into standardized pills tested through FDA-protocol clinical trials, with research partnerships at Harvard Medical School and UC institutions. Studies show protective effects for cardiovascular conditions by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗮 𝗤𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 — A 13-herb formula that gained worldwide attention during COVID-19. Clinical trials find that it helps reduce fever, cough, and recovery time in mild to moderate cases. The formula received emergency use authorization in multiple countries and was added to national treatment guidelines in China.

Both products demonstrate how herbal medicine can be validated through the same rigorous testing required of conventional pharmaceuticals—complete with quality control systems, safety testing for heavy metals and contaminants, and peer-reviewed research.

At 828 Acupuncture and Apothecary, we've spent over 20 years studying both the classical wisdom and the modern research behind Chinese herbal medicine. Your treatment is grounded in both tradition and science. 🌱

Science Meets Beauty: New Research on Cosmetic Acupuncture

We've always known cosmetic acupuncture works—our patients see and feel the difference. Now there's clinical research backing it up.

A recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked specifically at frown lines (those vertical furrows between the eyebrows). Seventy-two women received either acupuncture treatments or were placed in a control group. The acupuncture group received 12 sessions over 6 weeks, combining facial points with body acupuncture to address both local concerns and overall wellness.

At the end of treatment, 64% of participants showed noticeable improvement in their frown lines at rest, and 72% saw improvement during facial expressions. Even better? These results held steady three months later.

But the benefits went beyond just appearances. Participants also reported meaningful improvements in their quality of life—particularly in pain relief, physical function, and social confidence. Two-thirds of those who received acupuncture were satisfied with their results.

Unlike Botox injections that work by paralyzing muscles, cosmetic acupuncture appears to work gradually by supporting your skin's natural collagen production and improving circulation. The study found minimal side effects—less than 5% experienced minor bleeding, and less than 1% had temporary bruising. No infections or serious adverse effects occurred.

Traditional Chinese medicine has long taught that your face reflects your internal health. This study suggests that by treating both facial points and supporting your body's overall function, we can achieve lasting improvements that go deeper than surface-level fixes.

Cosmetic acupuncture offers a holistic, low-risk alternative to more invasive procedures—addressing not just how you look, but how you feel. Your skin, your nervous system, and your confidence all benefit when we work with your body's natural healing wisdom rather than against it.

Curious about facial rejuvenation acupuncture? Book a consultation to learn how this gentle approach can support your wellness and beauty goals.
