T. J. Rutherford, Psychotherapy

T. J. Rutherford, Psychotherapy Individual, family, and couples counseling. What is psychotherapy? It is deep listening, empathy, guidance. The therapeutic process is a confidential one.

It is a place where you may bring your troubles and challenges, joys and accomplishments. When it feels like you are falling apart, you may just need someone who can help you to see how things may be falling together. I can help you sort out feelings of anxiety, depression, loss and transition as well as help to address issues associated with addiction and relationship conflicts. Whatever brings you to me, I will be honored to welcome you to a space of healing and growth. My practice has at its foundation a solid Code of Ethics that ensures what is shared here stays here. Taking the first step takes courage, and while reaching out may seem somewhat difficult, I am only a phone call or email away. I am a client-centered clinician and my goal is to counsel in ways that best serve you. If you struggle with being highly sensitive, I will provide a safe place for you to explore your feelings. Together we will determine the best path for you.

In September, our city experienced a 100-year flood caused by a devastating hurricane that cost people their lives, livelihoods, and sense of security. My husband and I were able to evacuate to a friend's home who had electricity, Internet, and clean running water. We stayed for 21 days to allow us to continue working. Two days before we left our shelter from the storm, I fractured my left fibula. Luckily it was at the very bottom of the bone so it did not require surgery--just an ankle boot and physical therapy. A few days ago, I got back on the mountain! I love to hike and I hadn't felt strong enough to climb until now. I may have overdone it (I did), and still it felt so good to overcome my fears and get to that waterfall!

It seems I've been on a bit of a posting sabbatical! Today I come here with so much gratitude. For spring, for flowers, for friends, for my life partner, and for you, followers, who are reading this today. As I sit at my desk, I am looking out at our Japanese maple tree which is being kissed by the morning sun. The nighttime rain has already dried from its leaves and it looks healthy and happy. The prism in my window is casting rainbows throughout the room and even on my face! Our peony bushes are so prolific this year they have created a hedge in one of the gardens. I've found joy in sharing them with others. I offered one to the water delivery man yesterday and got a big smile in return. I took a giant bouquet to a meeting this week and people wondered if they were real! I offered the whole thing, pitcher and all, to a dear one to take home and her face lit up. Sharing IS caring! Calla shoots are emerging from the ground, tightly rolled with pointed tips. Soon they will unfurl to reveal their lovely yellow flowers. I planted a vegetable garden on our back deck in a tall garden box built by my husband. It's exploding with radishes, lettuce, carrots, and beans! Down below, in the backyard, I've planted many herbs (that repel groundhogs!) including basil, rosemary, oregano, and others. (If you can't beat 'em, don't feed 'em!) This is my favorite time of the year! Miracles of our earth are popping up and aiding in erasing negativity -- at least for a while. I'd love to hear about you. How is your springtime coming along? Where do you find gratitude?

Are you feeling stuck inside with cabin fever? Why not take yourself on a solo adventure? Go to a matinee, slip into a local shop, and wander the downtown streets of your city. Sometimes an unplanned meandering of sorts can be just what you need to make you feel better.

The holidays are bearing down on us. I have noticed that traffic is heavier than usual and stores are busier. I'm giving myself permission to breathe, relax, and practice self care. I've decorated enough to bring a cheerful vibe to our home. Let's take care of ourselves during this time. You are enough. You are doing enough. Everything will be okay.

How are you feeling? How might you self-soothe? What do you need right now? What could help you? Who might help you to feel better? Identify this. Do this. Find this. Reach out. You are cherished.

I am thinking of people who have left their cities, to work, to heal, to wish and hope. I am thinking of those who stayed, because they wanted to, or had to, or could not leave. I am sending so much light and so much love. No matter your choice, it is the right one for you. Even if you are doubting the wisdom of your choice. You know. You will know. It's okay if you don't. I am one of you and I am holding space for myself, and you, during this challenging time.

Recently I went to view an exhibit by Dale Chihuly. The colors and the shapes were magnificent to see. Some things that stand out in my memory are how great it felt to hold my husband's hand as we walked through the exhibit and how nice it was when the docent, who was almost exactly my height and size, put her arm around me to explain a piece that covered most of the wall. Also, another woman and I discussed how we'd never cut our hair because of age. So, in addition to viewing amazing glass art, I felt connected to the people around me. It may have been the best part of all.

"Probably, not necessarily, but probably, the shortest distance between here and there—between today and the life of your wildest dreams—runs through joy. As much of it as you can possibly stir up. But that's only if you're in a hurry. Zip, zap, zoom!"

How can I have the summer blues when there is so much loveliness all around me? I think it's time to get out of the house and wander around this great big beautiful world. I hope you'll do the same, if you are able!

Open your heart to the possibilities of love. Keep it open for when the tough times arrive. Try not to close it forever, even when someone hurts you. Allow the light to shine through with those whom you may disagree. And shine that light brightly for those who are younger, that you might be a teacher of what truly matters during this short time we are here.

Look for the beauty that is all around you. It is there regardless of how you are feeling and if you are anxious or sad, it may offer a bit of hope. I hope it does.
