Have you visited the NC Arboretum lately? When you are there next time, make sure to visit the Willow Pond. Dr. Kowa and his wife, in the name of Blue Sky Pediatrics, have sponsored the building of the steps at the education shelter. They also dedicated the educational floating island in memory of Dr. Kowa’s parents.

Their son, Makade (a part-time nurse at Blue Sky), and his wife, Brittany, recently visited and had a quiet memory reflection thinking of his grandparents.

The Arboretum is a great place for family time.

TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DAY!!

Take some time with your child in the kitchen today and experience making cookies by hand. If your child is old enough, let them get their hands in there and help or even guide them to making cookies by themselves. Here is an easy recipe you can try that uses a cake mix as the base:

Very Vanilla Cake Mix Cookies
Happy Sandy’s Kitchen

“When my kids were young I often made what I called ‘Cake Mix Cookies’. I loved that I could make such a wide variety of cookies based on the flavor of cake mix I used and what add-ins I included. I’ve used yellow, white, chocolate, lemon, and spice cake mixes.”

“ Very Vanilla Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Cookies.” Get ready for a soft yummy very vanilla chocolate chip cookie that will be a hit with your friends and family. It's soft, vanilla, and loaded with mini chocolate chips.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter, softened (1 stick)

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 (15.25 oz) Yellow cake mix

1 1/2 cups chocolate chips - semi-sweet - I used mini chips but you can use the regular size ones if you prefer.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Put butter, eggs, and vanilla in a bowl and using a mixer cream these together until smooth.

Now add in your box cake mix and mix until well combined.

Add the chocolate chips and stir.

Drop by spoonful onto a non-stick cookie sheet- about 2 inches apart.

Bake for around 10 - 12 minutes, or are golden brown around the edges.

Let the cookies cool on pan for 3 minutes, transfer to a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper.

Enjoy!

Today is National Coloring Book Day. To celebrate, we will give all of our staff a “Calm” coloring book (some days you just need a reminder) and all of our patients for the day a small coloring book of their own. We will give these out on Monday.

For those who aren’t a patient on Monday, we don’t want to leave you out. We are attaching coloring pages of Blue Sky Pediatrics that you can print out and spend time coloring these with your child.

August 3-9, 2025 is NATIONAL EXERCISE WITH YOUR CHILD WEEK.
This is an exciting opportunity for families to get those muscles moving. Children need our guidance and support to lead a healthy life. We encourage families to unite as one and exercise together this coming week and hopefully you’ll have so much fun, that this will become a regular healthy habit.
Some ways you can exercise as a family are hiking, jogging, running & dancing. You can go for a family walk. You can play a sport together like tennis, basketball, or frisbee. You can play tag with your kids and they will love it no matter their age.
If you have questions about exercising, you can ask your Blue Sky Physician for suggestions for safe exercises based on your child’s age and physical condition.
Exercising together can be a fun activity filled with quality time for you and your children.

Some days you just need a hug! Wishing you all the hugs today from all of us at Blue Sky Pediatrics.

Today is National Drowning Prevention Day!! With hot days still ahead of us this Summer, we wanted to share some tips and links to keep everyone in your family safe.

Drowning is a leading cause of death in childhood, especially for children 1 to 4 years of age. Drowning risks and prevention measures change as children grow, but at all ages, multiple layers of prevention are needed. Key prevention measures include 4-sided fencing of all residential pools, close supervision of young children whenever they are in or near water, and swim lessons once children are ready to learn to swim. Life jackets are always recommended in open waters no matter how well your child swims.
