The final project of award-winning filmmaker David Lynch was his foundation's short documentary entitled "Relief from Within," a film made in Asheville after Hurricane Helene.
For 20 years, Lynch’s foundation has supported teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique to at-risk and underserved populations. David was passionate about offering TM to inner city school kids, the military, police, first responders, and survivors of domestic violence—everyone at risk from over exposure to toxic stress. Research studies have found TM to be highly effective at bringing relief from PTSD and increasing resilience.
David's foundation worked with Asheville meditation teachers to bring certified TM instructors in from other cities and states to offer training, volunteering to teach whoever wanted to learn and waiving all course fees. Over 600 people signed up.
Most of these new meditators reported an inner peace and calm they had never felt before. Amid the destruction and loss, they found a treasure deep inside—a place of comfort, safety, and expansion.
“That first meditation session was the first time I had any sense of relief in the last two or three months,” says Asheville musician Haydon Welsh. “Each time I sit down to do it, I feel a little closer to home.”
Artist Ruth Greenberg’s studio was destroyed when the French Broad River obliterated Asheville’s cherished River Arts District.
After practicing this meditation for two weeks, she said, “This is actual healing. I feel safe in my life, I feel calmer. I feel a kind of happiness that just bubbles up out of me. I hadn’t felt that in so
long.”
Now, a year after Helene, meditators continue to come together throughout the week at the Asheville TM Center for group meditation and healing.
David Lynch did not live to see the finished product of his short film about Asheville, but here it is: a collection of interviews in which local people describing what happened to them a year ago, and the transformation they experienced after learning an effective meditation technique.
