Most people think lifting your arms overhead is simple, but watch what happens when we slow it down.

When arms go up, ribs want to flare. When ribs flare, the low back arches. When the back arches, the chin juts forward. Suddenly what looked like a simple arm raise is creating tension through your entire spine.

In a private yoga session, we have time to work through all of it: tucking the chin, engaging through the core, curving the back, finding length. Not because you're doing it "wrong," but because your body deserves to feel the difference.

This is also what we teach in our teacher training. How to see the whole chain reaction, not just the pose and how to cue the details that transform someone's practice.

Curious about private yoga sessions or ready to deepen your teaching skills? Check out our free information session on Saturday, January 31 from 1:00–2:00pm at Rogue Valley Yoga.

You’ll meet the Sarah Sol, learn about our yoga training, and get your questions answered in a relaxed, no-pressure space.

Whether you’re called to teach or simply want to go deeper, this is your invitation to explore.

We warmly invite you to a Kirtan with Rob and Melissa. We are so grateful to welcome back Rob And Melissa for another lively evening of Kirtan and connection!

$25 online or pay at the door with cash, check or Venmo. This event is Included in the Namaste Membership. Gratuity for the musicians is encouraged. No one turned away.

Rob and Melissa are devotional musicians and Bhakti Yoga teachers known for their soulful, heart-opening kirtan. Blending ancient Sanskrit mantras with rich harmonies and accessible melodies, their music has been described as “joyful medicine” and “love and devotion materialized.”

With roots in Seattle and a global following, they’ve shared their music across the U.S., India, Europe, and Central America—appearing at festivals like Bhakti Fest, Shakti Fest, and the Northwest Yoga Feast. Their discography includes Tejase, Breathe, five mantra singles produced by Ben Leinbach, and their latest mythic concept album The Story of Sita and Ram, produced by GIRISH.

More than performers, Rob and Melissa are heartfelt guides into sacred sound, creating spaces where every voice is welcome, and devotion becomes a shared experience.

Join us on February 8 for an in-depth workshop devoted to two of yoga’s most revered inversions: Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Salamba Shirshasana (Headstand)—traditionally known in the Iyengar method as the Queen and King of asana—led by Martha Staff, a highly experienced, long-time Iyengar practitioner and teacher.

These postures hold a central place across many yoga traditions. Practiced individually, each offers significant physical and energetic benefits; practiced sequentially and with intention, their effects are enhanced—supporting clarity, vitality, and balance in both body and mind. Martha’s depth of study and years of teaching bring clarity and precision to this work, offering students a grounded, accessible pathway into these essential poses.

The workshop will move through carefully chosen preparatory poses, detailed alignment instruction, and the skillful use of props—hallmarks of the Iyengar tradition—to cultivate stability, confidence, and ease. Emphasis is placed on intelligent progression, safety, and sensitivity to individual bodies, allowing practitioners to build strength and understanding without force or strain.

Requirements
✅ Minimum of 6 months of hatha/Iyengar/Vinyasa yoga experience
✅ Desire and ability to practice inversions (postures with the head below the heart) Preparation
✅ Please eat at least 2 hours before class, with time to digest before class begins. Contraindications

If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma or eye-pressure conditions, or have cervical or shoulder injuries that limit weight-bearing on the head or shoulders, please consult your healthcare provider before registering.

This February workshop offers a meaningful opportunity to deepen your inversion practice under the guidance of a seasoned Iyengar teacher—developing steadiness, confidence, and a more intimate understanding of these classical asana.

Join us in welcoming another one of our newest instructors, Michael!

Michael offers his signature class, Aging with Intention, every Wednesday at 10:45 am—a supportive, accessible practice blending gentle yoga (often with chair support), Qigong, Tai Chi, and meditation.

Michael has been described as gentle, kind, patient, and fun-loving, and these qualities are reflected in his teaching. He performed his teacher training at the Bhakti Yoga Movement Center in Portland, Oregon, and received his certification in 2017. Since that time, he has completed numerous training and certification sessions in traditional, accessible, and restorative yoga.

Michael came to yoga relatively late in life as a means of healing a body that had endured decades of cycling and running. At the behest of his acupuncturist, he began practicing yoga regularly in 2012 and has conscientiously applied himself to the practice since then. He is a firm believer in lifelong learning and continues to apply himself to expanding his skill and knowledge base. He is currently pursuing certification to teach Qigong, a Chinese healing and martial art.

Michael’s current focus in yoga is on gentle and accessible yoga, especially as they apply to more mature adults. His classes typically incorporate elements of traditional yoga, meditation, Qigong, chair yoga, and somatic movement.

We're so excited to welcome Michael to the Rogue Valley Yoga faculty!

Meet one of our newest instructors at Rogue Valley Yoga: Kerri Cooke!

Kerri is a warm and inviting instructor whose approach is light-hearted: to meet the student where they are and gently inspire them to reach their next level (physically and spiritually). Kerri teaches a vinyasa style class interwoven with energy medicine techniques such as tapping and acupressure holds and has enjoyed teaching since 2014.

Kerri played Ultimate Frisbee competitively for over 10 years. One of her greatest joys while playing was to be submerged in the “flow” of the game. After three knee surgeries, she decided it was time to hang up the cleats. Still seeking flow, Kerri discovered yoga. Over the years, Kerri has continued to explore all the gifts and purposes yoga can fulfill. Yoga has been instrumental in Kerri’s life, whether raising her family or, as an avid mountain biker, keeping her body and mind flexible and strong. She aims to encourage and inspire others to explore and enjoy the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits that yoga practice offers.

Kerri also holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise/Sports Science, a master’s degree in teaching Health and Physical Education, and is certified in Energy Medicine Yoga.

She is now teaching Vinyasa (all levels) on Mondays at 5:00 pm and Prana Yoga on Tuesdays at 5:30pm.

Science shows that yoga can change your brain. But what does that really mean for your daily life?

According to Yoga Journal, regular yoga and meditation do more than help you feel calm. They actually change the parts of your brain that support focus, balance, and resilience.

Your prefrontal cortex, which helps with decision-making, clarity, and concentration, stays stronger and more active.
Your hippocampus, which supports memory and emotional regulation, is protected from shrinking as you age.

To put it simply:
🧘 You can focus better.
🧘♂️ You recover from stress more quickly.
🧘 You find it easier to manage your emotions.
🧘♂️ You support your brain’s long-term health, not just short-term relief.

At Rogue Valley Yoga, we offer practices that are both traditional and backed by science. What you learn on the mat can change how you approach your whole life.

Want to try a new approach? Book your next class at RogueValleyYoga.com.
