🌿 Understanding ADHD: Types & Subtypes 🌿
At A Zen Space, we know that no two minds look alike. ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is often misunderstood, but recognizing the different types and subtypes can help reduce stigma and increase self-awareness.
✨ The 3 Core Types of ADHD
1. Predominantly Inattentive Type
• Often called “ADD.”
• Challenges include difficulty sustaining attention, disorganization, forgetfulness, and being easily distracted.
• Sometimes overlooked because symptoms are less outwardly disruptive.
2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
• Includes restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, interrupting, and acting without thinking.
• Often recognized in children, but can persist into adulthood.
3. Combined Type
• A blend of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
• The most common type, presenting across settings like work, school, and relationships.
🌱 Subtypes & Nuances Within ADHD
Researchers and clinicians also recognize subtypes or patterns that help us better understand how ADHD shows up:
• Overfocused ADHD: Struggles with flexibility, gets “stuck” on thoughts or tasks.
• Emotional Dysregulation: Heightened sensitivity, big emotional reactions, and difficulty self-soothing.
• Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT): Daydreaming, slow processing speed, low motivation—often mistaken for depression.
• Impulsive-Emotional ADHD: Quick to react, high emotional intensity, with strong impulsivity.
• Executive Function Deficit Patterns: Struggles with planning, prioritizing, time management, and follow-through.
💡 Remember: ADHD is not a lack of intelligence or willpower—it’s a neurological condition with unique challenges and strengths. Many people with ADHD are highly creative, resilient, and innovative.
🌸 If you or a loved one relate to these patterns, know that support is available. Through therapy, coping strategies, lifestyle tools, and sometimes medication, individuals with ADHD can thrive.
