Restricting access to lethal means can allow someone contemplating su***de to pause, reconsider, and seek help before taking irreversible action. Lethal means safety involves creating time and space between individuals in crisis and their access to means of harm. Checking your home is a good prevention strategy.

🚨 Never Throw Narcan® Away: It Could Still Save a Life

Your expired Narcan® may be more powerful than you think! Research shows:

Multiple studies found expired naloxone often retains 90–110% of its potency, even decades past its printed expiration date

Exposure to heat, freezing, or repeated freeze-thaw cycles for up to 28 days showed no significant loss of naloxone potency

👉 Even if your Narcan® is expired, frozen, or has been exposed to non‑standard storage conditions—using it is far better than doing nothing.

Practical Tips:

Keep at least two doses available in case one is weakened or extra is needed.

If Narcan® has been frozen and won’t spray, thaw it by rolling it between warm hands, then administer. If it still won't function, call 911 and start rescue

Replace expired kits when possible—but don’t discard them if they could be the only naloxone available in an emergency.

Takeaway:
In a potential overdose, expired Narcan® is better than no Narcan®. Holding onto it—even if it’s expired or has experienced temperature extremes—can make the difference between life and death.
