Summer often gives us unique opportunities! A student was attending a summer experience at a different school, but it had the same layout as her home school. As she explored, she discovered the rooms used a different numbering system. This led to a discussion of why did this happen. What was the difference between room numbers (good mental math practice)? If you could assign room numbers, where would you start? What numbering system would you use? The student could not wait to tell her friends about this "other world" she found!

Whether you are teaching braille in person or remotely, instructing teachers, parents, and instructional assistants in braille reading techniques is a vital part of ensuring that students learn to read braille using proper form and tactile reading strategies. (Even when the TVI is not there to correct them!)
Here is a great instructional video that TVIs can share with their students’ teams to help them monitor and encourage proper hand placement and tactile reading techniques.

Paths to Literacy Video: Tracking in Braille. For teachers, families, and others interested in literacy for children and youth with visual impairments

We absolutely love cultivating our new to the field TVI's and giving them space to work magic with their students! I have nothing to add to this beautiful share....Shoutout to Maggie S. for not giving up and bringing braille to student who required a unique approach! Way to go Maggie!!!!!!

Maggie's post: "I got hired in December, so I don't want to say I finished my first year teaching, but I did finish my first semester with my own caseload of students with visual impairments. I have learned SO much in a small time, and cannot believe all of the
progress my students made.
The biggest thing I learned was to not listen when team members say a student can't. That 'can't' may be a "we haven't explored every approach". Whatever the reason may be behind 'can't' ..... don't believe it, and don't let it bias how you teach.
Teaching obviously isn't about the recognition, but dang this card from a parent brought tears to my eyes.
Here's to summer! Can't wait to see what the next school year brings !!

Handwritten card from parent: " Maggie, Thanks for your hard work & creative approach to bring braille to ______"
