These guys had so much fun at the Special Olympics Basketball Regionals Saturday. One got a medal and the other a ribbon. Well earned gentlemen!
They practice at home with a net in the driveway and have skills practice with Special Olympics each week.

What a great event! Thank you

Many of the people we support participate in Special Olympics. Some people go on their own, some need DSPs with them to be able to participate successfully. Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They encourage physical fitness, and help teach the social skills needed to be on a team. The athletes demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. We are so grateful for this amazing organization, especially our here in Southern Oregon ♥

Celebrating this incredible resident for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! 💙

This resident relies on the support of others for mobility, which means placing a great deal of trust in the people around her—sometimes even those she has just met. Despite several new staff members recently, House Manager Ruby shares that “she’s been pretty patient [through it all].” Her resilience and trust are truly inspiring.

One of the things she looks forward to most is visiting her mom, and an upcoming trip has her especially excited. Ruby says the car ride is part of the adventure: “She loves getting out of the house and going for drives, blasting classic rock—her favorite music—really loud in the car.” 🎸

She’s also excited to enjoy some live music at her house soon—because nothing beats the joy of music, movement, and a little bit of rock and roll.

Moments like these remind us how important connection, independence, and joy are for everyone.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is about celebrating the strengths, experiences, and contributions of people with developmental disabilities while raising awareness about the barriers they still face.

This year’s theme, “Nothing About Us Without Us,” highlights the importance of centering the voices, choices, and lived experiences of self-advocates in every decision that impacts their lives.

Here’s to celebrating inclusion, individuality, and the power of being heard. ✨

In honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we are thrilled to celebrate this resident and his incredible achievements! 🌟

He was in a production of Hairspray at OSF when he was 19 years old as part of their ensemble; he sang, danced, and had some lines. The making of this play was featured in a documentary on PBS, Including Us.

Now at the age of 25, he’s in a production of The Lion King through Pathway Enterprises, Inc. as a hyena. “[The play] is funny,” he says. “Right now, I practice the lines, then we will rehearse. It comes out in the summer.” He says “it feels good” when asked about being on stage and in two plays.

In addition to the stage, he wanted a job for a long time and finally has one he likes. He says that a job coach helped him with his search, finding a few options, and he picked the one he wanted. He now works at Grocery Outlet sweeping aisles, and says “I always try to improve and do more isles than before.”

He says the money gives him more freedom to do another activity he loves: going to Goodwill to collect movies, books on history and film history, and toy cars and figurines; he recently found a Batman action figure and a Bumblebee Transformer.

Congratulations and happy treasure hunting!

For March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we’d like to celebrate this wonderful resident, who just got a new job!

“My mom suggested I get a part-time job. She’s the one who inspired me to get it. I got a call three weeks ago saying they wanted me to come in and fill out paperwork. I did my CPR and physical. I’m a monitor for school buses in Phoenix – elementary through high school—making sure they behave themselves. Waking up at 6:00am is refreshing, and the money lets me buy things. I work from 6:00-8:00am and 1:00-4:45pm. I work to pick up the kids from school, then back to their houses.

“My favorite thing about my job so far is meeting the kids. A lot of the middle schoolers like to be goofballs and copy what I do. I used to be their age and push a monitor’s buttons, too ☺. They need someone who can help them to understand that that behavior wouldn’t work IRL. The high schoolers are as quiet as can be.

“I suggest that anyone go through First Student. They are very friendly and welcoming. I’ve actually gained a lot of friendships at work. They talk to me—I talk to them. They check on me and I always check on them.”

Congratulations on your new job!

Today we are celebrating this resident, who is learning how to use his checkbook himself and now he pays his own rent each month! He says he lets the team know when he’d like to pay his rent, then gets a ride from staff and delivers his rent check to the office.

“It feels pretty good to be honest, to get that done and over with,” he says. “I’ve gotten used to it. It kind of lets me plan things out in advance.”

Way to go!!!
