Ashland County Health Department, along with the Ashland County Health and Wellness Target Action Group, is finalizing details for the expert panelist discussion on colorectal (colon) cancer in Ashland.

Recent data from the National Cancer Institute (2018-2022) shows the number of colorectal cancer deaths per 100,000 people:
- Ashland County: 18
- Ohio: 13.9
- United States: 12.9

For comparison, the national goal (Healthy People Target) is 8.9 deaths per 100,000.

When Ashland County created its 2023-2025 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), the most recent data available was from 2016-2020. At that time, the numbers were even higher:
- Ashland County: 23.3
- Ohio: 14.5
- United States: 13.3

This shows progress in Ashland County but highlights that colorectal cancer deaths remain higher than state and national averages.

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancer killers in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. Colorectal cancer is largely preventable through screenings which can identify precancerous polyps in the colon or re**um so they can be removed, before turning into cancer. Screenings can also lead to an earlier cancer diagnosis, when treatment is most effective. Talk to your doctor about your risk for colorectal cancer and screening options. And be sure to join local experts for a Colorectal Cancer Panel Discussion on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at UH Samaritan on Main (663 East Main Street).
