Keep your holidays safe and delicious — proper leftover storage helps prevent food poisoning.
Whether you're saving grandma’s stuffing or last night’s turkey, knowing how to store and reheat leftovers can protect your family from foodborne illness.
Leftover Storage & Food Poisoning Prevention Tips
Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking (1 hour if it’s over 90°F outside)
Use airtight containers and divide large portions into shallow dishes to cool quickly
Keep your fridge at 40°F or below and freezer at 0°F
Reheat leftovers to 165°F to kill harmful bacteria
Label and date containers so you know what’s safe to eat
Consume refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days, or freeze them for longer storage
When in doubt, throw it out — bacteria doesn’t always change taste or smell
Wash hands before and after handling leftovers and avoid reusing original packaging for storage.
