Drinking enough water during pregnancy sounds simple, but it can make a big difference in how you feel day to day. It supports your energy, helps with digestion, and can even ease things like headaches or general discomfort.
A lot of people find it’s easier to just keep water nearby and take small sips throughout the day instead of trying to drink a lot at once. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just staying consistent can go a long way in helping your body feel more supported.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to share stories about the history of birth, the midwifery model of care, the ongoing work needed to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, and the care we provide at our birth center with a group of Wisconsin medical students.

We are grateful to Northwest Wisconsin AHEC, northwestahec,
whose mission is to connect students to careers, professionals to communities, and communities to better health, for creating this opportunity. We look forward to this experience every year and value the conversations, curiosity, and opportunity to share what we do here.

Support during labor doesn’t always look like doing something big. Sometimes it’s just someone being there, staying close, and helping you stay grounded through each contraction. Those steady, quiet moments can make a bigger difference than you might expect.

Hands and knees is a position a lot of people come back to during labor. It can help take pressure off your back, give your hips more freedom to move, and create space for your baby. Some people stay there for a while, others move in and out of it. It’s just one more option you can use when it feels helpful.

The Ashland Birth Center is honored to announce our partnership with the Midwest Maternal Child Institute in supporting Indigenous students on their path to becoming midwives.

This weekend marked our very first in-person gathering at the birth center— a time of connection, learning, and bringing didactic study to life through hands-on skills training.

Our lead instructor, Mary Sommers, alongside support faculty Savita Jones, Heather Prekop, Toni House, and NRP instructor Lisa Varnes Epstein, brought not only their knowledge and skills, but their hearts to this work.

But truly, it was the students who gave life to the weekend — through their determination, commitment, courage, heartfelt smiles and laughter. Their dedication to serving families and communities through birth work reminds us why this matters so deeply.

We are grateful to walk beside these future midwives and nurture next generations into midwifery work. ✨

A birth ball is a simple tool, but it can make a real difference during labor. Sitting, leaning, or gently moving on the ball lets your body stay upright while also taking some pressure off. A lot of people find it helps them stay more comfortable while still keeping their body active. It’s one of those things you can come back to again and again without needing a plan.

Small, consistent habits can go a long way during pregnancy. It doesn’t have to be anything big. Stretching a little, eating regularly, getting outside, and checking in with your body can help you feel more steady day to day. It’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about finding a rhythm that works for you.

Counter pressure is one of the most commonly used comfort measures during labor, especially when there’s strong pressure in the lower back. Having someone apply steady, firm pressure during a contraction can help take the edge off and make things feel more manageable. It doesn’t need to be complicated or perfect. It’s just one more way your support person can stay involved and respond to what your body is asking for in the moment.

Sleep can shift quite a bit during pregnancy, especially as your body keeps changing. A simple bedtime routine can help signal to your body that it’s time to slow down. Small things like dimming the lights, putting your phone away, or taking a few minutes to breathe can start to make a difference. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Consistency is what helps your body settle in and rest.

Welcome April Babies!

April was a month full of powerful stories, deep connections, and new beginnings—both for families and within our own midwifery community. 🌿
We were honored to welcome more babies within this space. One mother returned to birth her second baby in the same room as her previous daughter was born, while another family celebrated their third birth with us-also in the same room as their older siblings. This arrival marked the 11th baby midwife Savita welcomed within their extended family. The sense of continuity and trust in these moments is so special, as the decades of midwife life unfold for her.
There are days that reminded us just how unpredictable and beautiful birth can be. Two mothers welcomed their babies on the very same day, one at the birth center and one who had to switch her plans to give birth in the hospital, and assisting a planned fast labor over the phone.
We witnessed strength in so many forms this month. One mother experienced her first midwife-led birth with her third baby, embracing a new kind of support and care. Another first-time mom labored through the night, drawing on deep reserves of strength to bring her baby girl into her arms, surrounded by family. And another mother had the birth center experience she had hoped for-welcoming her second baby in an empowering and healing way after needing to transfer care during her first birth. This birth brought more special memories, as midwife Savita had cared for the father’s family during their births and has known him since he was just three years old.

April also reminded us that growth is always happening. Not only were babies being born, but midwives, too. Student Midwife Amanda completed her first continuity of care birth, reaching an exciting milestone on her journey toward licensure—and doing so with incredible skill and heart. Student Midwife Holly completed Phase One of her apprenticeship, and Midwife Marcy received her Temporary Midwife License from the state of Wisconsin, stepping confidently into Phase Two of her apprenticeship.

We are so grateful to each family who entrusted us with their care and allowed us to be part of such life-changing moments. 💛
Welcome, little ones-we are so happy you are here!
