Construction & trail closure.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is partnering with Ashtabula County Metroparks to restore 46.7 acres of streams, wetlands, and forest within Red Brook Metropark. TNC is a private non-profit organization whose mission is conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends.
The focus of this restoration will be the portion of Red Brook Metropark that is south of Carpenter Rd. This area has changed drastically over the last two centuries as forests were logged, wetlands were drained, and a golf course was constructed. All these land changes have impacted Red Brook and the wildlife that depend on it. One of the goals of this project is to add more fish habitat such as pools and riffles to Red Brook and its tributaries. The project will also help to reduce erosion and improve water quality in the Ashtabula Watershed. This restoration will complement the work that was done north of Carpenter Rd. in 2021.
For the next 2-3 months there will be construction vehicles at Red Brook Metropark working to build wetlands, restore Red Brook and its tributaries, and plant native trees and shrubs. During this time, the trail south of Carpenter Rd. will be closed. As part of the project, this portion of the trail will be rerouted to avoid wet areas. It is estimated that the trail will re-open in 2026. Ashtabula County Metroparks will continue to work with TNC in the coming years to reforest the project area and remove invasive plants. Please view the restoration project boundary in the map on the back of this letter.
This project does not use tax dollars, it is fully funded through TNC’s Ohio Mitigation Program. Please see the included brochure to learn more about how TNC’s Ohio Mitigation Program is restoring streams and wetlands throughout the state.
Please do not hesitate to contact Ashtabula County Metroparks or The Nature Conservancy if you have questions about the project.

Sincerely,

The Nature Conservancy & Ashtabula County Metroparks
