Just because I don’t think meds are “cheating” doesn’t mean i think meds are good for you.

Quick story time: I was in therapy for most of my 20s, I exercised and I ate “well”, I had ups and downs with drinking and my social health. Since practically birth, I had bout of severe insomnia. In my 20s I finally hired a coach and fully healed my insomnia! That is, for 2 years, then I relapsed HARD! I doubled down in therapy and started meds. Finally I am at a place where I can benefit from what I learned with my insomnia coach, but because my sh*t is chronic, I see myself being on [Lexapro] for life. I experience zero negative side effects, I’m on the lowest therapeutic dose, and I make sure to continue applying the lifestyle recommendations for insomnia for as long as I live 🤷🏽‍♀️

THIS is a sustainable and effective solution to my health problem, and the lens through which I help my clients/patients.

Giving yourself unconditional permission to eat may seem counter-productive for health, and without understanding and applying the other principles of Intuitive Eating, it most likely will be.

For those stuck in a dieting mentality: you have to go through a really messy time of unlearning that many call “the murky middle”.

A release of control on your diet and body, and the switch to embracing trust in your body, is often nerve-wracking if you have trauma (as most all of us do) and don’t understand the science and mystery of how f*cking intelligent the systems in our body to regulate fuel and energy expenditure really are.

Furthermore,
The mindset of caring more about what you cab ADD to your diet (think fresh herbs on your pasta, peanut butter on your toast, or even an egg to your ramen) not only frees you from a restrictive mindset but adds pleasure, staying power, and nutrients to an otherwise less-satisfying dish!

Wonderful eaters around Carbondale CO reflected on their appreciation for food and their body. Some of my faves regarding food were:
1. Abundance of variety
2. How it nourishes my body
3. It’s typically a time to destress and be with friends!

Regarding body:
1. Resilience
2. My body nourished my child

Instead of binging or restricting to gain control over my stress, I’ve developed awareness of my eating behaviors, what leads to them, the pros and cons of using them over other forms of stress relief, and how I can dabble in multiple resources versus demonizing any one or two. This is intuitive eating in real life. It’s neither perfection, nor an ideal.

Oh the nuances to intuitive eating! No, Intuitive Eating is not the “hunger/fullness diet” and again, all of this nuance is addressed in the many resources provided by the original creators, and Elyse Resch. Regardless, our bodies are resilient and will learn to adapt. You CAN learn to trust them :)

Not everything needs to be healthified, but marketing does a really good job at making us believe otherwise! You can eat the food that doesn’t speak up for itself (examples included above!) the same goes for marketing of fast foods as it does for health foods, the only difference is the market for health foods feels righteous and safe for paying top dollar instead of guilty for buying a cheap food.
