Honoring Sister Mary Antona Ebo this Black History Month

Sister Mary Antona Ebo was a pioneering nurse, healthcare leader, and civil rights advocate whose life was defined by service and courage. After overcoming racial barriers to enter nursing and religious life, she became a respected hospital administrator and one of the first Black women religious to lead a U.S. hospital.

In 1965, Sister Mary Antona Ebo marched in Selma alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., boldly stating, “I am here because I am a Negro, a nun, a Catholic, and because I want to bear witness.” Her commitment to justice, compassionate care, and leadership helped pave the way for greater diversity and inclusion in healthcare.

Lauren Underwood is a registered nurse, public health leader, and U.S. Congresswoman dedicated to improving healthcare access for communities across the nation. Honoring Hazel W. Johnson-Brown this Black History Month

A true pioneer in military nursing, Hazel W. Johnson-Brown made history as the first African American woman to become a brigadier general and the first Black chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Throughout her distinguished career, she championed higher education for nurses, advocated for equitable opportunities in the armed forces, and helped shape the future of military healthcare.

A registered nurse, Dr. Harvey was known best for being an educator. In 1948 she was appointed dean at Tuskegee University School of Nursing. In that role, she established the institution’s and state’s first Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Dr. Harvey went on to earn her doctorate in education in 1966 from Columbia University and serve on several prominent national commissions and committees, including the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, American Red Cross Advisory Committee on Nursing Service, and Nursing Advisory Committee of the Kellogg Foundation. Her students credited her for her powerful influence on their lives and careers, starting with encouragement to advance their education.
