It’s always wonderful to work with Denise!! 💕
Denise Gagnon, registration clerk, was nominated as a Caregiver Who Cares!
“Denise Gagnon demonstrated a strong "Questioning Attitude" by noticing that a patient remained in Same-Day Surgery(SDS) status longer than the standard amount of time. She proactively asked whether the encounter should have been upgraded to inpatient status, ensuring the situation was reviewed and addressed appropriately.
"Per written instructions, anytime a provider decides to extend a patient's stay beyond the initially planned one midnight, the case must undergo review. This process ensures the patient’s status is accurately updated to inpatient if necessary and that they are informed of any potential insurance coverage limitations.
"In this instance, Denise noticed the extended duration of the patient’s SDS status and raised the question about whether the encounter required an upgrade. Denise’s use of the High-Reliability Organization tool "Questioning Attitude" was pivotal in catching this discrepancy. By seeking clarity on the patient’s status, she demonstrated her commitment to ensuring that hospital processes align with established standards and support both patient care and compliance.”
Great work, Denise!

I have always had a passion for helping others. I started working on an ambulance when I was 17 years old. I moved to the California Bay Area and became an EMT when I was 20. My love and compassion for those that needed it grew. I saw many elderly patients who could not take care of themselves. They were being taken advantage of-exploited-and no one was looking after them. I found this disturbing.
I moved back to my home town of Astoria, Oregon and looked into Guardianship. I was shocked to find out that there was no one in the area that provided this service. I wanted to help. In the state of Oregon you are only allowed to have two clients without being certified. I wanted that higher certification!
I started studying very hard to prepare to take the National Exam for Guardianship. It has been a long road and I have persevered! Today, I finally got the wonderful news: I PASSED!
I am pleased to continue this adventure in serving those people in our community with a local resource.
