Hip pain, outer thigh tightness, or discomfort when walking and squatting often starts with how the femur moves in the hip socket.

When the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) becomes overactive, it can contribute to internal rotation of the femur, increasing strain on the lateral hip, thigh, and even the knee. In this video, I demonstrate an active release technique that combines soft-tissue engagement with client movement to help reduce tension, improve hip mechanics, and support more comfortable movement.

This video is part of an educational series: • Lower Cross Syndrome – Part 18
• TFL Massage Techniques – Part 1

Massage therapists: this is a valuable pattern to assess when clients present with lateral hip pain, hip hike, or recurring tension patterns.

If hip pain keeps coming back, this may be part of the reason why.

Hip pain is often linked to an underactive or overloaded gluteus medius, especially when the body compensates during walking, standing, or single-leg activities.

This side-lying active release technique combines sustained manual pressure with active hip abduction and external rotation. The goal is to calm overactive tissue while retraining the gluteus medius to stabilize the pelvis more efficiently.

Benefits include:
• Reduced lateral hip and low-back pain
• Improved pelvic and hip stability
• Decreased compensation from the TFL and lumbar spine
• Better gait mechanics and weight transfer
• Longer-lasting relief compared to passive techniques alone

This approach is especially helpful for clients dealing with hip pain while walking or standing, SI joint discomfort, lower cross syndrome, or one-sided low-back tension.

For massage therapists: this is an effective way to blend manual therapy with neuromuscular re-education to improve session carryover and clinical outcomes.

If hip pain keeps coming back, the issue is often how the hip is functioning, not just how tight it feels.

Hips Causing Problems? Try this

Most people don’t realize how much the TFL influences hip pain.
It sits right at the front of the hip and connects directly into the IT Band.
When it becomes tight or overactive, it pulls the pelvis forward, creates hip hikes, and sends tension all the way down the outside of the leg.

If your hips feel uneven, tight, or you deal with outer thigh or IT band issues, this small muscle may be the real cause.

I go over the origin, insertion, and why it becomes dominant in Lower Cross Syndrome in this quick video.
Feel free to share this with someone dealing with chronic hip tightness.

Is your pelvis tilted forward or tucked under? It could be the reason your hips or lower back hurt.

A lot of people struggle with hip pain, low-back tightness, or feeling “uneven,” and they never realize the pelvis is the root cause.

In the first image, you’ll see an Anterior Pelvic Tilt — this happens when the front of the pelvis drops forward. It often leads to:
• Tight hip flexors
• Increased lower-back arch
• Overstretched hamstrings
• Chronic low-back tension or pinching

In the second image, you’ll see a Posterior Pelvic Tilt — when the pelvis tucks underneath. This may cause:
• Tight hamstrings and glutes
• Reduced lumbar curve
• Hip stiffness
• Postural imbalances when standing or walking

If you’ve been dealing with one-sided hip pain, low-back pressure, or posture issues, your pelvic alignment might be the source.

If you want me to break down how to check your pelvic alignment at home, comment “Check me!”
And if you’re local and want a full assessment and treatment, feel free to message me anytime.

Do you ever feel like one hip sits higher than the other… or you get hip pain mostly on one side?

When a client is lying face up on my table, one of the first things I assess is their pelvic alignment.
A hip can sit higher, rotate forward or backward, or shift weight to the opposite leg — and these subtle changes can create major issues like:

• Hip pain
• Lower-back tightness
• SI joint irritation
• Uneven pressure through the legs
• Postural imbalances

These patterns usually come from daily habits: sitting, standing on one leg, driving posture, or even how you sleep.

If you’re dealing with hip pain and want to understand your specific pattern, comment below or send me a message. I’m happy to help guide you.

Shoulder Blade Pain Relief Massage Techniques

If you ever feel sharp or deep tension between your spine and your shoulder blade, these techniques can help. In this video, I’m demonstrating how to push tension away from the spine using slow thumb pressure, controlled elbow and forearm glides, and deeper work underneath the shoulder blade.

These areas include subscapularis, serratus anterior, and the lats — muscles that often get tight and restricted from poor posture, overhead movement, or long hours sitting.

If you want to see more clinical massage techniques for pain relief, follow my page and feel free to comment any questions you have.
Repost or share this with someone who struggles with shoulder blade or upper back pain.
