We’re so proud to announce that Amberwell Atchison was recognized by the Community Blood Center for having the second highest number of donors at CBC blood drives across the greater Kansas City area, eastern Kansas, and western Missouri in 2024.

Thank you to everyone in our community who came out to donate. YOU made this possible—and you’re helping save lives!

Blood donations tend to drop during the summer, but the need doesn’t. Be on the lookout for information about our next blood drive coming up in July. We hope to see you there!

We want to hear from YOU about our community's health needs.

Amberwell is working with local leaders and organizations in Atchison County and Brown County to update the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessments. As part of this process, we’re asking people who live or work in these communities to complete a short survey.

The surveys are one important step in gathering input about what’s working well, what challenges exist, and what should be addressed to improve health in our region.

The surveys are open to anyone who lives or works in Atchison County or Brown County. You can take the one that applies to you—or both, if you're connected to both communities.

Deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, June 19, 2025.

• Atchison County survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Amberwell_Atchison2025CHNA

• Brown County survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Amberwell_Hiawatha2025CHNA

Amberwell is helping lead the conversation, but we know that lasting change takes everyone. Thank you for taking the time to share your input and help shape the future of health in our region.

Quick Challenge—Can you spot the skin cancer? Swipe through these three images and guess which one looks cancerous. (Hint: There's a twist!)

Skin cancer doesn't always look the same—it can look different on everyone. That's why it's important to check every spot regularly. Nearly 1-in-5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, but early checks save lives.

Not sure about a spot? Don't guess—get it checked by your primary care provider.

Happy Nurses Week! This year, we asked several of our nurses a simple but powerful question: “Who inspired you to become a nurse and enables you to soar in your career today?” Their answers are thoughtful and inspiring—and we’re excited to share them with you! Check out to watch videos of Amberwell nurses from a variety of departments share what inspired them to become nurses and what gives them the courage to soar in their roles.

We’ve all had our lives impacted by a nurse at some point—and if we haven’t yet, one day we will. Take some time this week especially to say “Thank you” to a nurse. What they do matters. It matters to all of us.

We are excited to welcome Elizabeth Courtney, FNP-BC, to the primary care team at Amberwell Eighth Street Clinic. Elizabeth’s broad medical background has given her valuable experience working with patients of all ages and varieties of medical conditions. Her special interests are in geriatrics and weight management.

Elizabeth chose Amberwell because she has always been drawn to the unique aspects of healthcare in smaller communities. “During my clinicals, I was able to work in less urban areas, and I found great appreciation for the strong community in rural healthcare,” said Elizabeth. “The familiarity among residents and the opportunity to develop personal connection with my patients are aspects that greatly appeal to me.”

Elizabeth’s biggest inspiration for pursuing healthcare was her mom, who is a nurse. “I had originally considered becoming a court reporter,” said Elizabeth, “but then I thought about how good it feels to help people and decided to go into nursing instead.”

Treating her patients with the same care and consideration she would give her own family is at the heart of her practice. “It's important for me to stay informed and up to date in the medical field,” said Elizabeth. “I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment, where patients feel comfortable sharing their concerns and needs. My goal is to advocate for their preferences, educate them in their own terms, and ensure they have a clear understanding of their healthcare options.”

Elizabeth has two daughters and two grandchildren. She also has a Great Dane named Lucy and a cat named Socks that keep her on her toes. One of Elizabeth’s favorite hobbies is horses. She loves spending time with them and riding them whenever she gets the chance. Elizabeth is passionate about serving the community and regularly participates in walks and other charity support for melanoma and breast cancer.

03/16/2023

After 57 years in practice, Dr. John Growney has announced his retirement as a healthcare provider for the Amberwell Atchison community, effective March 16, 2023. Dr. Growney, originally from St. Joseph, MO, came to Atchison in 1966, fresh off a tour from Vietnam. He brought with him his wife, Gertrude, and six children (more would follow), as well as many important "firsts" to the medical scene in town.

His first practice was on the corner of Eighth and Santa Fe, which he shared with Dr. Spencer Fast. Growney's specialization was family medicine, and he was the first board-certified physician in Atchison. He brought with him new techniques such as laparoscopic surgeries, the use of endotracheal intubation for anesthesia to replace the use of ether, and epidurals to ease the pains of child birthing.

For him, those developments were critical to what motivated him throughout his long care: patient care. "My primary goal has always been quality patient care. To me, that is the main purpose of good medicine. All the new techniques meant quicker recovery times and decreased hospital stays for my patients. I value that. That, and same day service. I have always valued accessibility. For the first thirty years of my practice, we didn't make appointments. We saw everyone who walked in the door who needed care. And I wanted that care to be exemplary," says Growney.

As his practice grew, he served in many capacities. He delivered over 1,000 babies for the Atchison community. "Home was only 90 seconds from the emergency room and delivery room. It was very convenient," says Growney. When the era of specialized physicians came to the forefront and as general practitioners did fewer and fewer surgeries, he studied anesthesia and did a thousand of them as well. As his patients aged, he sought another certification to more deeply learn the best practices for that age group, getting his board certification in Geriatrics.

Along the way, he also served as a county coroner; he served on the board of the local housing authority; he was on the public health board. He was Grand Marshall of the annual St Patrick's Day parade. He was a diplomat for the American Board of Family Medicine. He was chief of staff at Amberwell Atchison. He took his skills on medical mission trips to serve the underserved in Guatemala, the Cayman Islands, Nicaragua, and Haiti. His children and grandchildren and other Atchison physicians joined him on these excursions. He took up scuba diving and studied some wilderness medicine. And all along, he continued his family practice board exams, one of only a handful of physicians in the United States to take them and pass them six times.

Dr. Growney's long practice is notable for two things: a love for learning, and a love for passing on that learning. His office served as a training ground/think tank not only for many medical interns over the years, but also for his sons who followed him into medical practice—Dan Growney, MD; Mike Growney, MD; and Jim Growney, PA-C.

Dr. Growney is retiring to visit his grandchildren and play in his yard-sometimes both at the same time. "My most important legacy is certainly my children, my family. We are extremely tight knit. We all deeply enjoy each other's fine company. But we are increasingly far flung. I have kids on both coasts and in a lot of territory in between. We have three new great grandbabies due in July of this year. None of them are in the same state, none of them are arriving in Kansas. I want to tend to my own family as I have tended other families over the last nearly 60 years. It is time to stop and smell the new baby skin!"

As a nurse practitioner, Michelle aligns her professional approach with the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics. Michelle values each patient as an individual, considers each patient a partner in their own care, and keeps patients well informed and well educated before making decisions about their health care. In her career, Michelle makes it her mission to stay current on new treatments and techniques. This ensures patients receive competent and up-to-date care.

During her clinical rotations, Michelle discovered a passion for caring for the mental health of her patients. “Everybody struggles with something. I want to let my patients know that you can go through rough things in life, but you can turn those things around, because there’s hope," says Michelle. "In the end, a patient may not remember the specific details of their appointment, but hopefully they will remember I made them feel valued, empowered, and respected.”

Encouraged in her lifelong love of science by her father, who was her science teacher in junior high, Michelle always took a special interest in medical science. After attaining an undergraduate degree in Health and Exercise Science, Michelle spent several years raising her children. Her children eventually encouraged her to return to school to pursue her dream of a medical career.

Michelle began her nursing education by earning her RN, BSN from the University of Saint Mary.

She went on to acquire a Master of Science in nursing from the same institution.

In discussing her role at Amberwell, Michelle characterizes her position at Amberwell Eighth Street Clinic as “one of the best things that ever happened to her.” She is grateful for the opportunity to care for patients of the neighborhood-style primary care clinic.

Michelle currently lives in Olathe, with her husband, two of her children (the others are adults) and a pet dove they call Baxter.
Michelle considers herself a ‘physical fitness fanatic.’ She always works exercise into her daily routine. Michelle is also an avid reader. She especially enjoys reading about exercise and fitness. Michelle and her husband find rural Kansas beautiful. They have discussed someday owning a piece of property and having an aviary.
