“Hearing aids aren’t really designed for the population that most needs to use them,” she told me. “The move to make devices smaller and more sophisticated technologically isn’t right for many people who are older.” says Barbara Weinstein, a professor of audiology at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

Many hearing aid manufacturers are moving towards building smaller and smaller hearing devices to appeal to the general public's desire for smaller, less visible instruments. However, when we take into consideration things like dexterity and vision issues, choosing the smallest, least visible device isn't always the best option for ease of use. Small hearing devices can be wonderful for one's self-image, but providers must take into account the patient's physical limitations- if any- as well.

Experts shared their advice for older adults who have a hard time using their hearing aids.
