For anyone engaging with kids you don't often see this holiday season, remember connection can look different for a kid than it does for adults. Add in the potential for overstimulation, exhaustion, holiday travel, sleeping somewhere other than home, being in a new environment, overdosing on sugar or screens, being out of routine, being cooped up in the car, or people they aren't used to seeing, and the holidays can be really overwhelming.

Holiday cookie baking, caroling, travel, shopping, crafting, wrapping presents, going to see Santa, going to see Grandma, picking out a Christmas tree, decking the halls, watching someone else open a present, or smiling for a photo... which is the worst?

In play therapy there's a technique we use where we always assume competence. So if a child is putting together a puzzle and they haven't asked for help, we assume they're capable of doing it. We're there and ready to help if they need it, but we're trusting that they can do it. If they're working on a marble run and it's difficult and they growl we might say "oh that's really difficult" or "sometimes that can be frustrating" but we don't jump in to try to fix it for them. If and when they ask for help, we provide it, but this strategy is threefold:
1. It communicates to a child that we believe in them and their abilities.
2.It communicates that the therapy setting is a little different than elsewhere. Here we have time to let them figure it out, and we can sit with them in that uncomfortable emotion.
3. It encourages healthy and clear communication. I don't want to assume you need help, because I could be wrong. But if you indicate what you need, that lets me know exactly how I can be helpful.
