What is better?
I get asked that a lot. I see it posted on Facebook in various groups and pages. Should I do chiro? Massage? PEMF? A blanket? This type of therapy is better than that one, this device is better than that one, SO MUCH ARGUING. The world is a pretty indecisive place right now.
It’s a really hard question though “what is better”, and not one that anyone can really answer without physically being present with your horse, knowing it’s history, seeing it in real life, feeling, watching, asking questions.
What is better for one horse may not be better for another. What is better for your horse today may not be the right better for tomorrow.
I do know that all of us as therapists, are all doing our best with the knowledge that we have. Most of us are also doing our best to be better. With every horse, every CE, we learn more which in turn helps the next. We all have regrets, things we wish we would have known sooner, things we know could have helped some horse in the past if only we knew then what we know now.
My advice to horse owners is to learn. To communicate. Find a therapist in your area that will communicate with you & the rest of your team, because it IS a team. Not one of us has all the answers. Find someone who will do their best and if they don’t know will reach out to their network to find someone else who may be able to help.
But also know that what’s better for your horse requires understanding your horse; does it have a problem? Injury? Lameness? Rehabbing? Muscle disease? Is it “just” working super hard? Does it have ulcers? Kissing spines? Saddle fit issues? Unbalanced feet? Inadequate nutrition - be it eating too much or not having enough of something. All these things factor into what is better for your horse. There isn’t a therapist in the world that can fix all those problems without some input from other members of your horse’s team & some collaboration from you, the owner.
What is better is what works for your horse, this is generally a little bit different for each horse. It’s also why I am committed to keep learning & to keep listening to the horse.
