A major winter storm will impact communities across the U.S. this weekend, bringing with it freezing temperature and unpredictable weather. Leading up to the storm, Safe Kids will be sharing tips to ensure families stay safe! As you prepare for the cold weather and potential power outages, it's important to remember that heaters and portable generators can help families stay warm but can also increase the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Protect your family with these tips:

🚨 Install CO alarms on every level of your home, especially around sleeping areas.

⏰ Test CO alarms every month.

🏠 Avoid using your oven or stovetop to heat your home.

🚗 Warm up vehicles outside of your garage.

❄️ Check the vents outside your home or the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace to make sure they are clear of snow and other debris.

As you get ready to cook up some delicious holiday treats, let’s keep safety top of mind so everyone can enjoy the fun. Here are some simple tips to keep your little helpers safe while you cook:

🧒 Create a kid-free zone and teach younger children to stay at least 3 feet away from the cooking area.

👶 Keep babies safe by placing them in a high chair where you can see them.

🍲 Always cook on the back burners and keep hot foods and liquids out of reach to avoid burns.

🧑‍🍳 Teach older kids to never leave the kitchen while cooking and always use oven mitts or potholders to carry hot pots and pans. Use this time to model and explain safe cooking habits to your children! 💖

Holiday toys can hide serious dangers for kids. This holiday season, we’re partnering with America's Poison Centers to provide some tips on toys:
🔺Check the label and choose toys appropriate for a child’s age or development.
🔺Avoid toys with hazards like accessible button batteries or magnets.
🔺Check for recalls on toys: https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls
Small items can cause severe internal injuries or poisoning if swallowed. Always supervise play time and store small pieces safely, up high and out of reach of children.
If a child might have swallowed something, call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Free, expert help is available 24/7, even on holidays.

⚠️ PSA: Winter Coats and Car Seats Don't Mix! ⚠️ Bulky jackets and snowsuits compress in a crash, leaving too much space between your child and the harness. The fix? First, buckle the harness snugly without the coat. Keep your child warm by covering them with a coat or a blanket over the buckled and tightened straps.
