2025 Statistics
While it’s common for Midwives to post our annual statistics, I’d like to change the narrative. When potential clients ask for transfer rates, many are unaware of all the nuances in our statistics and it doesn’t give a clear picture of the care given. We recommend parents asking all the hard questions to find the right fit for them, but I would encourage parents to seek out more than just a %. Included is just a peak into our 2025…
44 women came into care
36 full-term and in-town for labor
If you look at this XFER rate for pregnancy it may seem high but what you don’t know is the multiple miscarriages, unavoidable pre-term labors, 1 mom out of town and didn’t expect a fast baby so early, a devastated twin mom who’s baby needed to have surgery at birth and her dreams of homebirth were crushed, and 1 mom who struggled with Gestational Diabetes despite all the hours of nutritional support and collaboration. All these women matter.
36 full-term and in-town for labor
11% XFER to hospital (1 needed a repeat c/s, 1 food-borne illness eating out the night before, 1 exhaustion/pain management, 1 fetal distress)
All 4 transfers were needed and appropriate and we were grateful for the hospital’s support.
Make no mistake, as Midwives, we want a successful homebirth too, experience sadness and cry with our clients. We are human.
2 of those 36 needed immediate postpartum XFER to help with a sticky placenta or support with blood loss even though it stopped by the time we arrived.
This is where staying calm, making appropriate emergency decisions, and trauma informed consent plays a big role.
Other special notes of those 36-
7 1st time Moms (6 vaginal births - ROCK ON MAMAS)
3 VBAC’s (2 successful vaginal births & 1 redemptive repeat c-section)
1 set of twins
3 breeches
Women are incredible, regardless where and how they give birth.
