                                            ✨Late Summer —> Earth Element🌎
In the late summer, during the harvest season, we strive to nourish our Earth Element - the Spleen and Stomach. The earth element is the root of our post-natal Qi aka where we derive our day to day energy from and is SO important there are whole schools dedicated to it. A common quip is if the earth is strong, recovery is good. Basically, if this element is robust in our bodies, we have the strength to fight disease. In TCM the Stomach breaks down food and the Spleen builds blood, two very vital functions to create energy. It might not surprise you that in the west we call this the digestive system. 
A few ways to nourish the element this season. 
1. Eat warming foods. 
Start incorporating more soups, stews, bone broths, fermented foods, etc into your diet as you begin moving away from the raw salads of summer. Stoke the digestive fire and eat foods that are easy to digest.
2. Take time for self care. 
The earth element is one of the nurturing caregiver. Making sure that you’re tending to yourself while tending to others helps balance the spleen. Perhaps spending time out in nature and seeing the earth could be a good practice. 
3. Try to see the big picture. 
The earth element is related to pensiveness. This can look like over-thinking details and swirly thoughts OR taking a step back to have gratitude for the great harvest (the many blessings we have in our lives). You might find some profound revelations make their way to you if you give yourself some mental space. 
4. Think about talking to a Chinese medicine provider about incorporating slightly sweet herbs that tonify spleen qi like Da Zao (jujubes), Gan Cao (licorice), and Bai Zhu (atractylodes rhizome). 
5. Eat an easy to digest, protein and fiber rich meal before 11a. 
The energy going to your spleen and stomach is the most powerful between 7-11a! Having nourishment in the morning sets you up for a good day.
