Living with chronic pain affects more than just the body. Ongoing pain can place constant stress on the nervous system, influencing mood, energy levels, and emotional well-being. Anxiety, depression, and stress are common—not as a weakness, but as a natural response to persistent discomfort and limitation. The good news is that when pain is treated comprehensively, mental health often improves too. Addressing both the physical and emotional sides of pain helps break the cycle and supports long-term healing. You’re not alone in this, and whole-person care matters.

Myth: Pain management means taking medication forever — Busted.

Pain management isn’t about lifelong prescriptions; it’s about using the right tools to reduce pain and improve function. Modern approaches focus on identifying the source of pain and treating it with a combination of options such as interventional procedures, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and supportive care. Medications may be used when appropriate, but they are often temporary or minimized as pain becomes better controlled. The ultimate goal is to help patients regain quality of life—not rely on medication long term.

Medications can play an important role in chronic pain management, but they work best when used as part of a bigger plan. At Ashford Pain Solutions, we view medications as one tool, not the solution. When combined with image-guided injections, minimally invasive procedures, physical therapy, movement, and functional support, they can help reduce pain and improve daily life—without masking the root cause. Our goal is simple: less pain, more function, and a better quality of life by treating the source, not just the symptoms.

Our Story

Dr. James Ashford is a board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist who leads the team at Ashford Pain Solutions in Athens, Georgia. His goal is to help his patients feel like themselves again by using medically sound treatment practices and a patient-focused approach to therapy that relieves discomfort and addresses the underlying cause of their pain. During medical school, Dr. Ashford became interested in the physiology and biochemistry of anesthesia, as well as the many different interventional procedures involved in pain management. This interest, coupled with a strong desire to help people dealing with chronic or new-onset painful conditions, led him to specialize in pain management. Dr. Ashford attended the University of Georgia in Athens for his undergraduate studies and graduated magna cm laude with a degree in biology. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and completed residency training in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Ashford then underwent fellowship training in pain management at the University of Florida in Gainesville, before returning to Athens to establish his practice. He grew up in Athens, remains committed to this North Georgia community, and makes his Christian faith and family a priority in his daily life. Dr. Ashford is an accomplished pianist and enjoys traveling and playing golf, basketball, and tennis during his free time.
