1. Congratulations to Dr. Emily Hardman (PhD will be conferred this month) for her dissertation: Aging in Context: The Interplay of Mental Health, Cultural Narratives, and Personal Experiences in Later Life.
Committee: Dr. Bilal Urkmez (Chair), Dr. Yegan Pillay, Dr. Krisanna Machtmes, and Dr. Chris Bhat.

2. Emily Hardman is a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright-Schuman Program. Only three are granted each year, and the grant duration is nine months. The program focuses on U.S.–EU relations, EU institutions, and EU policy. It is one of the few multi-country Fulbright awards that allows recipients to conduct research in any EU member state.

Emily’s project explores cultural narratives around aging and their emotional impact. Both the EU and the U.S. have recently introduced policies addressing older adult mental health. The EU launched an initiative in 2023–24 targeting this area, and the U.S. expanded Medicare coverage to include counselors beginning in 2024.

Emily will spend time conducting qualitative research via focus groups in Germany, Greece, and Croatia. Each of these countries has unique variations in geriatric su***de rates and aging populations—Greece, for instance, has the lowest geriatric su***de rate in the EU. Emily will leave the U.S. around Oct 15 and plans to return in July, 2026. She plans to make Germany her primary research base and will make shorter visits to Greece and Croatia for collaboration with local researchers and graduate students.

Airport Pick-Up for New Counselor Education Students:
Starting August 2025, The Alpha Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) has launched a program to pick up new Counselor Education students from CMH airport (John Glenn International Airport, Columbus) and bring them to Athens. There is a GO Bus option (https://ridegobus.com/routes/) but if flight timings do not align with the bus schedule, please contact the Alpha Chapter of CSI President, Emmanual Adarkwa to arrange an airport pick-up (ea278422@ohio.edu) or to arrange for a student to meet you at the bus stop in Athens. The Counselor Education community at Ohio University looks forward to welcoming you! Thanks to the Alpha Chapter of CSI for this great initiative.

While I am doing updates for all the good work our Ohio University Counselor Education community, including our alumni, does, I wanted to share that I have two "Voices from the Field" contibtuions in Dr. Corey's book, Counseling Journeys.
1. Leadership Reflections from an Asian Indian First Generation Immigrant (p. 223)
2. Visions for the Future of the Counseling Profession (p. 235).

Dr. Corey is a true icon in our profession and he continually gives back to our profession. it was an honor to be part of this book!

Congratulations to Dr. Aysegul Ercevik (degree will be conferred in August!) for her recent essay in Dr. Gerald Corey's book: Counseling Journeys: Reflections and Voices from the Field. Her essay is titled, Growing as a Counselor Trainee and Supervisor: Reflections on Experiences in Two Countries, and draws on her experience in Tukiye and the USA.

The target audience for Dr. Corey's book is graduate students and new professionals. But I think it is full of inspiration for counselors at any stage!
