Piedmont Neurosurgery of Athens

Piedmont Neurosurgery of Athens Piedmont Neurosurgery is a patient-centered clinic dedicated to bringing you the best treatment. Welcome to Piedmont Neurosurgery of Athens.

We are a patient-centered clinic dedicated to bringing you the best possible treatment options for cranial and spinal conditions. The way we see it, every patient is unique, and that means the way you’re treated should be also. While many neurological surgeons measure success by the number of patients they rush in and out of their offices and operating rooms, Piedmont Neurosurgery of Atherns defines success by the number of people who are able to live better lives after receiving our care. Our mission is to provide the most up-to-date neurosurgical care for you in a setting where you are known and respected. We believe that medical care is a team effort, shared by you and all of us in this office.

For me, sports medicine started as part of neurosurgery — so many injuries overlap. But it became personal when I realized how much of what I see in the office could actually be prevented with exercise and fitness.

That’s why I’ve stayed so connected to athletics and athlete care over the years. Because when kids start sports and physical activity young, they don’t just build skills — they build health, confidence, and a better life.

The key is making sure they can do it safely, so the benefits last a lifetime.

A pre-surgical evaluation is about more than just preparation—it’s a critical step in ensuring your safety and the best possible outcome.

By assessing your overall health, reviewing your medical history, and identifying potential risks, we can create a surgical plan tailored to your needs. This process also allows us to set expectations and answer any concerns you may have before the procedure.

Your health and confidence matter to us. If surgery is recommended, we’ll make sure you’re fully prepared every step of the way.

If you've been to our office, you know Nina—the friendly face who greets you with a smile and makes sure you're taken care of.

Last weekend, she showed that same determination on the race course, finishing her first half-marathon at the Athens Half! We couldn't be prouder, and some of our team got to be there to cheer her across the finish line.

Heads up: If you're thinking about challenging yourself and you just can't take the leap, stay tuned till Friday...Nina was kind enough to share more about her journey and why she chose to push herself to tackle this challenge!

Next up: Spring 2026!

Hey Dr. Sankey - Why did you become a Neurosurgeon?

10/16/2025

When we talk about brain injuries in sports, the most common one we see is a concussion. Many call it “mild,” but here’s the truth: there’s no such thing as a mild brain injury.

Other injuries we see include skull fractures and, in the most severe cases, epidural or subdural hematomas — the kinds of injuries that can tragically be life-threatening.

That’s why awareness, quick recognition, and proper medical attention are so critical. Every hit to the head deserves to be taken seriously.

Because protecting young athletes means protecting their brains first.

When it comes to your health, the details matter. Even small symptoms can provide critical insight into your diagnosis and treatment. Be honest about everything you’re experiencing—our team needs the full picture to provide the best care possible.

If you have questions, ask them. We want you to be involved in your care, and no question is too small. Understanding your condition, treatment, and recovery process empowers you to make informed decisions about your health.

If something doesn’t feel right—side effects, unexpected pain, or recovery challenges—speak up. We are here to support you, and addressing concerns early can make a difference in your outcome.

And if something changes, tell us. Whether it’s an improvement or a new concern, keeping us updated allows us to adjust your treatment as needed. The more we know, the more we can help.

Your voice is a vital part of your care. We’re here to listen—always.

When it comes to sports, head and spine injuries can happen fast — often from sudden stops, awkward hits, or too much force on the neck. 🏈⚡

Most of the time, what athletes experience is muscle strain. But how do you know when it might be something more serious?

👉 Pay attention to:
1️⃣ Mechanism — how did the injury happen?
2️⃣ Character of the pain — is it sharp, severe, or unusual?
3️⃣ Other symptoms — numbness, weakness, dizziness, or anything neurological.

If any of those red flags show up, it’s important to get it checked right away. Because in sports medicine, early recognition is everything.
