What does a FAN do?
FANs - Friends, Allies and Neighbors - of Athens County is a program housed at the Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities in The Plains, Ohio. FANs strives to get individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities involved in their community. People with disabilities have skills, talents and passions to share and make great friends. By connecting individuals to new friends, local clubs, organizations and volunteer opportunities, we aim to help people establish lasting relationships and community connections.
So, how can you get involved? We’re seeking Athens County community members to participate by sharing their interests and passions with others. Do you like to go hiking? Shopping? Cooking? Music? Going to the movies? Making art? Volunteering with a local civic group? Why not bring a new friend along to share in the fun? We match community members with individuals with similar interests to form a natural connection. Every person is unique and so is every friendship. It doesn’t matter if you’re a college student, a full-time professional or a retiree, we encourage you to become a FAN!
For information about how to get involved with FANs, contact FANs coordinator Sara Brumfield at 740-541-9641 or email fan@athenscbdd.org. FANs is a partnership between the Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities and COMCorps, an AmeriCorps program housed in the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
